i left my laptop in a friend's car for 1 1/2 hr in -10 C temperature, inside a laptop bag which was also inside a backpack.

When I got home, the centrino screen had all these lines and such throught the vertical. same thing with the windows XP start up. then when the system started loading the members part of XP, the whole screen was full of sqaures and my laptop restarted

I had to disconnect the power, and decided to let myl aptop warm up and try again. since then my laptop is fine or is?

Is this a cause for concern?

well when the laptop is that cold turning it on can cause condensation in the laptop which is not good. That is way below the temp those parts are rated to operate in so it could have damaged something. But really only time can tell.

It's always good practice to run a laptop at room temp..... it's not going to kill it, but what you've seen is common... I rush it sometimes too... during the winter here in the Northeast, if I forget my notebook in the car or something... the systems will often to that. It's not good for it, but realize it really isn't made to work when it's cold like that.

very cool temperatures are harder on the lcd and hard drive. the rest can handle it. but condensation is a big bad! so if your laptop has been left outside and is cold, either leave it in the bag for an hour to slowly warm up in an insulated environment, or fire it up outside (again, may be hard on the screen and hard drive). you could even pause it at the system menu. then let it heat itself up. once warmed up, water won't condense on it when u bring it inside.

hmmm this is interesting fact. Given that I live in Southern California and don't have to worry about such a thing, the most I had to worry about is overheating my laptop.

Low temperatures may cause the screen to 'latch up'. Thid ussually goes away, certainly with modern day LCD's, but you won't find a manufacturer that will guarantee you the latch-up won't be permanent if one occurs.

.... LCD - LIQUID Crystal Display..... It's not going to freeze, but the viscosity change certainly can screw it up till it warms up.
