Sometimes my W3V boots up into XP and is unusable. Other times it boots up and it is perfect. During the boot I'm not interfering in any way, except turning on bluetooth with the button. The sequence always goes like this:

    1. Realise bluetooth mouse (MX900) is not working.
    2. Go into bluetooth control panel for manual connect, which fails.
    3. Click "logoff" so that all the running processes can be reset (quicker than a reboot).
    4. During logoff the following programs require an "end now" command: zcfgsvc (zero config wifi), hcontrol (asus app), alcxmntr (sound?), Intel Pro Set Wireless, .NET-broadcast, WindowsFormsParkingWindow, then finally explorer.
    5. Logoff halts and freezes with screen empty except wallpaper. (I guess this is because explorer crashed.)

The only way to fix this is a reboot from the power button, hoping that the next boot will work.

I'm thinking software instability because I don't get problems like this in Ubuntu when I dual boot. Any ideas where to start looking?

    Cheers,
    Ben

remove as many start up apps as you can
i had that problem, but i could shut down normally. then the next time i'd boot up the beast, it'd stop after the 'welcome' screen and just show the background. i'd have to set it to standby, and then wake it up for it to finish booting

go through your startup menu, and also look through regedit for 'run' and 'runonce'. if you remove a program, make sure you remove it from all profiles/areas. if you dunno what it is, leave it. removing startup programs can seriously screw your pc

also you might want to defrag (if you haven't already)
