Has anyone else had sound issues with the Realtek high def soundcard & vista? I can't work out if it's just a poor implementation of Vista drivers or I have a faulty soundcard. The machine is about 1 week old, and it has always done it. I've done all the usual 'remedies' latest drivers etc.

I've got a W2P with Vista preinstalled....basically, I get intermittant crackling/stuttering when playing sounds...be it from itunes, windvd or sometimes with the windows startup tune.....It doesn't seem to be connected to cpu loading, although I've had a couple of songs almost come to a halt in itunes (kind of like putting your hand on a record and slowing it down)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as having to send the computer in for repair would really suck!!!

We haven't heard any reports of the same issue be it in Vista or on the older XP model... I know the issue you're having because I've seen it in other cases on other systems - very randomly.. I'd say of a dozen cases, one was actually an issue with the speakers. The other times it was always resolved by uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it.... you should also look at the settings to see if anything is off....

The other thing to question is WHERE this weird sound is coming from.. if it's coming from the sub, maybe the sub is getting frequencies that are too high.... etc

Thanks so much for the info....Realtek seem to be updating the driver on a daily basis!!
....I can't tell you how much hassle you just saved me. I already had an RMA number for ASUS service, Fedex slip and Fedex laptop box were made and I was about to do a data backup in preparation for shipping the laptop back to ASUS.
Installed version 1.63 and SUCCESS :D  no more crackles

BTW I found ASUS support very responsive, I had an RMA and Fedex airbill within 30 mins of calling.

This is my first ASUS & I'm loving everything about it....My wife's in the market for a new laptop...I see an ASUS in her future as well.

Good to hear it.... there is no secret that a lot of Vista drivers, not only in Asus systems, but across the board are getting updates on a regular basis... It's not a bad thing, and all the systems work just fine.. but some of these little things don't affect everyone and they just need to be tweaked for a while till everything is perfect....... Same thing happened with XP when it was first released..
