Anyone care to speculate on what we can expect from the W3j as far as sound quality? Of course the internal speakers (not expecting much), but more importantly what sound codec (Intel HD Audio?) and what chip (Realtek, Sigmatel, etc.); I would be running through external speakers while at my desk.

If anyone with a V6j would care to comment since perhaps Asus would manufacture the motherboards with similar chipsets, how is your sound quality?

    Appreciate it.

Edit: Wanted to add, have there been any complaints of hissing on the lineout/headphone jack of Asus notebooks? Also, any poor grounding issues? I have a Shuttle XPC that you can hear internal PC noise that increases with keystrokes and mouse movements.

I have a Asus A6Ja which uses a Realtek ALC880 HD Audio chip, and i think the soundquality is excellent. There is absolutely no eletric disturbance at all, and the soundquality is superb.

I've had a bad experience with internal soundchips before (AC'97, Nvidia SoundStorm), all having electrical disturbance becuase of HDD writes and so on, so i actually expected to get some disturbances in a notebook. But so far so good, the sound is perfect.

I'm not sure what soundchip is used on the W3j, but i think Asus mostly uses Realtek codec's in their notebooks. In the A6Ja's case, they use the ALC880. You can read about the sound codecs (technical specifications) on Realtek's homepage.

I have an ASUS V6j, and I don't notice any problems at all on my external speakers (Logitech Z3e). Its up pretty loud and sounds great. The internal speakers have little bass to them, but there is still no problems from the audio chip/processor. By the way, the audio on the V6j is by SoundMax, if that matters.

No hiss/distortion/whatever here, not on 0 volume or max volume (a6ja realtek alc880 hd audio) through headphones (Sennheiser HD580).

That is good to know, I also enjoy listening through high quality head phones and things like hiss or distortion drive me nuts. I remember when the 4G ipods came out, they made a whirring noise when changing tracks and that drove me so batty I eventually had to sell it.

A hiss at 0 volume shouldn't be a problem. Come on guys.

Sound off the realtek codecs isn't too bad, but I opted for a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA.

I just picked it up today, but my notebook isn't in from the service shop yet.

    So I must wait. *sigh*

The thing feels really flimsy and I feel like I'm gonna break it or something.
