UX303UA running Windows 10
The problem is that if I have headphones plugged in and shut down the computer while they are still in, on the next start up there is no sound from the built-in speakers. I have to plug something in the 3.5mm stereo jacks and plug it back out to get the speakers to work again.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue, or a Windows 10 issue. Basically, on startup the computer thinks that the headphones are still in and therefore is not using the built-in speakers.
Similarly, but not related - if the laptop has been running on battery, I shut it down, plug the charger in, and then start the laptop, the dynamic contrast function kicks in, even though I have disabled it from power settings for all modes! If I unplug the charger and plug it back in, the contrast is set back to normal.
So...are these firmware/hardware issues, or Windows 10 peculiarities?

Can you assign the speakers as the default playback device, or are they already set as such when you are back in Windows?
As for your other issue... well I have to ask: Has this been happening from day one (right out of the box)? Or did you notice it, perhaps, after some updates/applications were installed? -

Sounds to me like a slight firmware issue on the power plug issue, the headphone assignment is down to windows and the audio drivers. You could try updating them.

Both issues have been happening since day one.
Speakers are already set as default. Also, just noticed that the issue occurs in the other direction too - if I had been listening via the speakers, shut down the computer, plug headphones BEFORE booting Windows...sound comes out of the built-in speakers even though headphones are plugged in.
It is a jack issue, but I don't believe the problem is hardware-related. I've already updated to the latest Conexant drivers, but I have a suspicion it's a WIndows 10 issues. Wanted to see if anyone else has experienced something similar. -

The jack takes control when you have headphone plugged in.
Have you tried setting the Conexant Audio device as default? -

So far no. And neither has been Microsoft support. It's not really a problem, but more of an annoyance.
