How quickly does Asus get new chips, cards, etc. into their systems? Is it a different speed between their bare-bones laptops and their pre-built (forgot the name) laptops? What's your estimation of the time when Asus will have available what's in my signature? ;)

    Thanks!

Probably not until the 1st or 2nd Qtr of next year...

However do you know that as long as you have the current platform (NAPA chipset [Intel 945] and Yonah processor [T2xxx series]) you can upgrade to the MEROM processor, and then Vista once it matures?

You won't get the Santa Rosa chipset that way, but realistically you are talking about at least the 1st or 2nd Qtr of next year before you will see Vista mature enough to use (most people are going to wait until at least Service Pack 1 before implementing it), and even longer before you see all of the software written to it.

Haha - I've never paid attention to a major switch in OS's like I am now so I don't know what to expect. I'm thinking of waiting for Santa Rosa because I'm almost definitely gonna wait for Vista and Merom and at the convergance of all three new technologies, I feel like I'll have a computer which will still be more than usable in 4 years as I'm graduating. I know I could upgrade a Core chip to Core 2 under Napa but then I lose out on 802.11n and some of thepower-saving Merom was designed for. If it's just another month or so wait after Vista, it seems like a good deal to me...

asus is pretty slow to release new chipsets. slower than say HP and whoever. Vista will prob be pushed back again. as for supporting N standard. It wont mean much concidering most people are not going to upgrade to N for a long time. Like universitys and hotspots. There would be no benifit. you would only notice if you are getting large files back and forth not for internet access. i would say asus is like 3 months behind others. around there. maybe even longer depending on what kinda laptop you want. hell they still havent really got out all the new napa laptops yet and wont till the end of summer whats that like 6months behind.

Still, isn't Merom phase II in the switch to multi-core, 64 bit proccesors? If Merom will be out in the first couple of months of '07 and Santa Rosa a month or so after, doesn't it seem to make sense to complete the system Intel setup? I know 802.11n won't really affect browsing speeds or anything like that but isn't is supposed to have a better range? Plus you lose the power-saving which Intel keeps talking about...

    Thanks

Waiting for a year from now is an interesting approach...but what are you using now, and how much "speed" will you lose by waiting another year just to pick up some minimal speed advantage?

You know that in a year there will be yet more new technology on the horizon.

The real question is when do you need a new laptop. Whenever that is, just get the best there is at that time.

paladin is right. whenever you need a notebook buy whatever is cutting edge then. the speed difference will probably be non noticable. These notebooks are more powerful than most desktop pcs. And they always talk about power saving. The yonah is already alittle more power efficient. But the speeds keep going up so while the speeds go up the power pretty much stays the same. like they are getting faster but battery life isnt getting really better. The chips are getting more efficient at higher speeds. I dont even have my hopes for vista that OS has been doomed from the start. How many years is it behind. so just get a laptop when you want. Who cares if something new comes out in 6 months there always is something new, You keep waiting and you will end up with nothing.

Nonetheless, Merom is coming out in two months and I don't need the computer until then anyway (plus I'll have more money by then). How long do you think it will be before the first Asus Meroms come out? Will they just put them in their old computers first or start from the ground up? I read some of the future Asus model names but can't find them again. Does anybody know what's coming out in the next Asus line?

    Thanks

Asus will most likely put the new chips in the napa chipset 945 first. and i dont see them starting to till maybe 1-2 months after the new chips come out even then maybe 3 months before all the new models have them. and they will be slow to switch to the new platform. asus is slow coming out with their new lines.

Dont buy a laptop till you need it. and whenever that is buy what good then.

    1. What does "come out" really mean?
    a. It means released on paper. No one has them yet. They are not integrated into any laptops yet, and probably won't be for several months.

    2. No need to start from the ground up, so ASUS and other laptop ODMs for the first time really have a chipset that will support the next generation of processors. This will really speed up the process, but expect it still to take several months to actually get into the channel so that we can ship to end users.
