An embarrassingly avoidable accident resulted in a small food (meat juice and oil) spill over the touchpad of my Asus Z63A. Some of the juice seeped between the buttons. The laptop started acting funky almost immediately, and I quickly turned it off. It was no better when I tried to use it about ten hours later. The next day, however, it worked almost perfectly, except that the touchpad buttons didn't click properly and the touchpad would occasionally act up slightly.

I'd like to clean underneath the touchpad before any nasty corrosion happens, but I don't know how to get to expose that area. I know how to remove the keyboard and the harddrive, but how do I access the underside of the touchpad?

You'll need to open up the notebook more perhaps even taking out the motherboard to access that area, before the food gets gunky and even start smelling!

Try and ask your dealer if they can send you the assembly guide.

Some dealers will do a cleaning for you, that might be an option too. Might cost a bit but it has to be done right, or any leftover residue will eat the motherboard.

Thank you both for your replies. If the entire laptop needs to be dismantled, I'm probably better off seeking professional help (I'm referring to the technical rather than the psychiatric kind). Unfortunately, the store where I bought my laptop has since closed, and the new location is difficult to reach via public transit. But a local computer store with a repair centre may be able to help.

Even if your original dealer moved, I'd highly recommend trying to take it back there, since they know the model and might have spare parts available if needed. Definitely worth bumming a ride off a friend or something. I feel your pain on the public transit though - I spent a summer riding the busses and light rail in LA/Pasadena.

Did you buy from Eddie at Geared2Play/BTOTech/YNot2k in NYC? I know that they moved locations recently.

No, I live in Toronto, and bought my laptop at CanadaSys (now MilestonePC). The new store is in the suburb of Markham.
