Steps to take with new G1s

Hi, I recently purchaced a new G1s and it was delivered today. Playing around with all the new features and stuff that comes with a new notebook, I ran into a few problems.

1. Startup is pretty slow, is it just Vista or should I remove some of the stuff that usally comes with new comps? Can you recommend me to a bloatware list thread and any specific programs you would recommend to keep/remove?

2. Havn't installed any games yet, should I stick with the stock video drivers or upgrade? If upgrade, where and what driver?

3. My performance index shows at 4.4. Most I've seen on this forum with the same exact specs was 4.8. Is it all the bloatware and extra stuff I havn't removed yet causing this? I have the generic G1s specs. 2.2 GHz, 2gigs ram, 8600 GT.

4. Any other steps I should take to optomize my new G1s such as a BIOS update, sound drivers, etc.?

It's Vista, but you may want to uninstall Norton. DO a search on 'G1s bloatware', there are a few good threads.

Check the G1s owners lounge, tons of info there.

 

I just ordered mine today. I just have a few questions for you.

-How long did it take to ship?

-Is the sound good when you play music?

-Where did you buy yours? Sometimes bloatware is on it because from the place you bought it.

 

I ordered from Gentechpc. They called monday morning (I ordered friday night) and it was shipped monday night. I should've recieved it tuesday morning, but UPS problems pushed it to today.

The sound on the speakers arn't so great, but I use external speakers and subwoofers so it doesn't really bother me.

I don't think Gentechpc loaded all this junk on the computer because of you don't configure the default hardrive, Vista is preinstalled on it. I would def recommend Gentechpc if you're looking to buy this computer because they have very fast and friendly service.

 

I actually ordered from another place because the laptop I wanted just took way too long to ship. Yeah, it would be nice to hear how games work on it. I'm sure with the help of this website you can delete any of the bloatware.

 

Just another question to throw at you. I have heard that the CPU doesn't perform well when the battery is charging. Is this true for yours?

 

Numberwise, the computer does preform slower when the battery is below 90% and its plugged in. However, I don't feel a big noticeable difference.

 

Oh, thats great news. I'm not a guywho worries about the numbers too much. Noticing the difference just by looking at it is a different story. Its good to know there is no noticable difference.

 

Can anyone refer me to the latest 8600 GT driver thats still safe/stable? And should I update the sound driver or is the stock one good enough?

 

For video drivers there is no "safe/stable" one, its all just finding one that works best for you. For the the 163.11 work very nice for me... look at laptopvideo2go.com

My G1S plays my EQ2, WoW, and Second Life just fine. I have not tried any other games. EQ2 plays better on this laptop than my old desktop... but thats probably because my desktop was very ram limited (e4300 overclocked to 3.0ghz, 1gb ddr2 800 ram, 8800gts 640, sata hdd, asus p5n-e sli mobo, etc etc).
