I just bought the Asus 900 Eee PC with the single 16GB SSD "hard drive" option and Windows XP Home edition, SP3.

Let me say, this has to be the slowest PC I have used in 15 years.
I used a stop watch to time how long it takes to open/close things like Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. It takes 17.34 seconds to open them and 9.79 to close them. I have nothing installed aside from what Asus provided. I did upgrade to 2GB of system memory.

I tried adding a 16GB SSD to add some space for the swap file but it did not help.

I called Asus, the "tech agent" if he can even be called as such said this is the kind of performance I can expect and to get used to it.

I was so annoyed, I just hung up on him.

Please tell me that this is not indicitive of what I can expect, it is meant to be a birthday gift for someone and I would have to return it if this is what I can expect out of it.

I am going to get a USB DVD/CD drive and try a reinstall from Factory, perhaps the image they used was corupt.

Also, is this normal HDTune performance? Somehow I doubt it.

    Zenica,

I know you are not going to want to hear this but there have been reports that the 16gb version has a slow SSD. Read Newegg reviews and comments at eeeuser. I did not realize that there was a 16gb version that had XP though...

If you can still return it I would return it and buy the 900HA. It has a 160 gb 5,400 rpm hard drive and is the same size (though a tad heavier). They cost $350. I'm very happy with my HA. The only negative might be that the only version out there now is shiny black (though I like it). The only other downside is the webcam is only .3 megapixels vs. the 1.3.

All of the SSD versions are slow, the 1000H is the best one to have IMO.

Another positive on the 900HA is that is has the 1.6 GHz Atom processor instead of the Celeron and gets 5 hours of battery time.

Yeah, get the HDD version for now, and when the price of the better quality and quantity SSD drops, simply swap it.

I couldn't believe, 17 seconds to open Windows Explorer.

Well, I will be swapping it for the conventional HDD version.
