What if you would buy a notebook in a foreign country and then bring it back to your own country, ... where there is no service center. Can I still expect some decent support or am I just asking for trouble in this case?

You send/bring it to the closest nearby service center.

This is also the case if one travels from, lets say the UK, and is in Asia or the US, and if service is needed, bring it to the service center of that country. Thats why they have worldwide warranty :)

Actually, I don't think you need to send it yourself. Just send the RMA form and they should arrange for the transportation.

On the global support page ( http://support.asus.com/service/service.aspx?no=407&SLanguage=en-us) it says (step 5):

Finally, you can choose between deliver the notebook to site by yourself or pay for a postage delivery.

So, suppose you buy a notebook in Asia and then go to Europe. You suddenly have a problem with your laptop and find yourself in a country that has no service center. What do you have to do then? Travel to the nearest country or pay the (high) transportation costs and bear the transportation risks yourself? I can hardly imagine this.

Currently it's the only thing that keeps me from buying an Asus laptop ...

Again, if you buy an `ensemble' ASUS notebook (I'm not sure how they are called now), in many places you get a 2year "pick-up-and-return" warranty. This means ASUS pays for the postage during warranty, and the only thing you need to do is pack the notebook and wait for the post van driver.

If it's not pickupandreturn, then I don't know.

It does not seem to be pickupandreturn, at least not from what I read on the Asus support website.

Nevermind the ASUS website, that's a generic things that covers out-of-warranty repairs, etc.

What you need to concern yourself with is the warranty type of the notebook you are buying; specifically, you need to make sure it's a pick-up-and-return warranty. Preferably for 2 or more years. If that's the case, then you're covered.

That would make sense, but I can not find anything else except the "2 yrs limited global warranty". That's also stated on the product description from the local reseller here (I'm trying to buy in Singapore). There's no mention of pick-up-and return. If I would buy this notebook now, there's currently no way that I could back up my claim for a pick-up-and-return warranty.

I notice that you are from The Netherlands. I myself am from Belgium. The closest service center for me would be in The Netherlands, but I would feel uncomfortable sending it by postal service and it's way to far to deliver it myself. The only that's stated for Belgium is a hotline tel number that turns out to be invalid. Lol

I am 90% sure that it's the same thing (2yr limited global warranty and pickupandreturn). Ask the reseller.

To be sure: With the notebook there is a (usually black/grey) flier which describes the terms of the warranty. The terms "pickup and return" should be there -- if it's in English. You might ask to examine that flier if you don't trust the reseller / clerk.

I have good reasonably good experience with the ASUS service in the Netherlands (well, I have a tough problem with my notebook that they are unable to solve; but nevertheless I would rate them OK).

Deliveries here in the Netherlands are via TNT Express. I suppose that also works for Belgium.

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't got the chance yet to go to the reseller again, but I will definitely inquire about the flyer.
