I have just bought a creative external USB sound card in an attempt to get 5.1 for gaming and DVD's.

Just been looking up this SPDIF thing - would this give me 5.1 without this external card? Should I send it back?

Looking to use cheapish 5.1 logitech speakers - would one of the "Toslink to Mini-Plug Adapter" just plug straight from the laptop to the speakers and off I go?

Also can anyone recommend decent surround sound headphones from the UK - preferably ones I can plug into this SPDIF if possible.

    Thanks!

You can output SPDIF 5.1 from the normal line out as well. So you can safely refund the creative external card if that's the only thing you need it for.

I'm not sure if the 'cheapish' sound systems take digital input, you need to check. Maybe it's cheaper to keep the USB card and get the cheap sound system.. or maybe it's a better performance/price ratio if you send the creative back, get a better sound system, and use the SPDIF. It's up to you...

I don't know about the rest.
