    Hello,

Someone on the notebook review forums is interested in buying a spare GPU I have for his recently purchased laptop.

The card I have is a GTX 260m (MXM III 3.0b) that was pulled from my Alienware M17x.

I know it's probably a long shot but I was just wondering the card was even remotely compatible to his laptop.

It might be if his laptop supports MX 3.0, but from what I heard from other threads there may be some compatibility issues. Id suggest trial and error. If it doesn't work the first time you might need a BIOS update, if that fails the chances are the card was never intended to work.

No, it'll be the wrong shape. Asus uses GPUs with a proprietary format. It won't even physically fit.

Although the ASUS G series have removable GPU's they are not equipped with the normal MXM design many other manufacturers provide. ASUS uses their own inverted MXM design which means that you can only upgrade to another ASUS GPU of the same connection type.

and even if you did get a hold of a g51/71 gtx260m, it would bake itself in the g50v case.

Probably not, or not as bad as we'd think. The innards of a G51 are almost the exact same of a G50.

the fan definitely runs a good 30-40% slower than the G51J.
