i have the ASUS Z71V and right now if i swap from the DVD burner to the 2nd battery while in windows, explorer, task manager, everything except for like AIM and Firefox, freezes. the 2nd battery does work though.

from 2nd battery to DVD burner, i cant use the drive until i reboot.

is there any way to be able to just be able to switch between the two without rebooting?

i think the laptop used to be able to function normally after removing the DVD burner but now it doesnt, and the 2nd battery to DVD burner never worked

Try it in safe mode. I would suggest to use a linux boot cd to boot a linux OS and see if it works but cant really do that since you will take the dvd rom out to test it which would make a boot OS mess up i think never removed a Suse dvd while using suse LIVE.

I get the same thing with my Z70Va and the Samsung DVD/CD-RW combo drive. Not exactly sure if it's the drive or the notebook. The drive doesn't have the option to 'safely remove device' like i've seen on other modular optical drives, but I've successfully hotswapped it in a Dell 600m and D610 without the freezing or needing to reboot issues.

I haven't been able to test another drive in my Z70Va since I don't have another optical drive that can be flashed to slave. The notebook doesn't boot with the dell optical drives (Hitachi CD-Rom and Philips DVDRW).
