ok 3 days ago i bough an acer aspire 7741g with 17,3 lcd etc etc.

    I didnt like the graphics performance ( 4gb ram, i3 - 380m, radeon hd 6370M 512mb)

Now im going for the ASUS X73SV 17.3" HD

    its got
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M - 1gb ddr3
    Intel Core i5 2410M / 2.3 GHz
    4gb ram 1333mhz (upgrading to 8gb)

Is this a big step up, can i expect more from this system and how is it gaming wise?

The GPU will be a nice step up, from the 6370M to the 540M you'll get over 300% increase in performance (3d mark vantage score). But still dont expect stellar performance from the 540M, its a mid level graphics card, you'll be able to run all the newest games but for good FPS you'll want to set most of your settings to medium.
The overall performance of your computer will go up as well because of the cpu and RAM upgrades.

Keep in mind that for the $800 price range (what I believe that laptop costs) there are plenty arguably better options out there with the 540M.

The Sager NP5160 is one, and it's worth a look too.

Adding to what Hutsady said, if it is gaming you're looking for, there's always the G74SX. It is slightly more expensive, but you'll see another 100% increase in performance against the X73SV.

Also, if you can still wait a bit, ASUS is rolling out the N75SF, and it sports a GT555M. Might not be as powerful as the G74SX, but it shouldn't cost a lot more than the X73SV.
