Hey everyone, I have an ASUS F3F and have a small problem. I'm pretty sure I should be able to assign specific functions to corners of the mouse pad. For example, top left corner for "back" and top right corner for "forward" while browsing web pages. I should be able to do this in "device settings" but when I click on the "settings" tab I get a DLL exception error that reads:

An exception occured while trying to run "c:windows/system32.dll,control_rundll "c:\windows\system32\main.cpl",mouse"

The laptop is brand new and this happened without installing stuff.

So I uninstalled the synaptic driver and reinstalled and same thing. Everything else is fine....mouse pad works ok but I just keep getting that error.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I hope it's an easy fix.

You're right, you should be able to assign properties to the touch pad.

The first thing I'd try is going to the Asus support site ( http://support.asus.com) and downloading the Synaptics driver from there. If you sign up as a VIP (you just have to register your notebook, no fees) it's easier to navigate. And, if you need email support from them, it's all set up and they respond usually within 24 hours.

Thanks guys, I did exactly what you said...first tried to re-install from ASUS...no luck. Then I tried from Symantics and it works perfect now!

I wonder why the one from ASUS doesn't work? And it even says on the symantic site to use the manufacturers.

    Thank you!

It works on "backward" everytime but not "forward", maybe driver problem?

Paleo, this exception error was a known bug which is now fixed in the latest version which you can download straight from synaptics website.

Thanks Bender! Yep that's exactly what I did and everything is great now. Thanks for letting me know it was a known bug....i just don't understand why ASUS wouldn't update their d/l page with the new driver.

Also, whenever I defragment there are some files that can't defragment...never had this problem with any other laptop except ASUS...anyone know why? Also, it doesn't even state which files could not be defragmented.

Also just had a speaker glitch...only "crackling" heard...but then I rebooted and everything ok.
