This is a known issue, another user experienced this aswell. You might want to consider returning it.

Asus G1S is known to have super hot running gpu's

Did you buy from partsbuffet? It's hit or miss w/ that seller.

The fact that some GPUs in the G1S overheat, is well-known. But what is happening here is not that. The cooling system is designed so that the heatsink uses a liquid/gas recirculation to exchange heat, and tilting the notebook disturbs the recirculation pattern. That's why the temps shoot up when the notebook is tilted.

Best is to just try keeping it horizontal.

And no, it's not the reason for which the cards break down. In fact, the cards don't even break down in abnormal numbers, AFAIK.

why in the world would you tilt it? and how much at what angle? just for regular use like on your lap or at a 45 degree angle?

if that's the case then it's another non-sense problem, otherwise it just wasn't designed to be tilted at a 90 degrees angle.

I bought two G1S machines from partsbuffet and apart from the scratches, they both work fine. I only paid $725 for each one though. I could've gotten an equivalent XPS m1530 for $1500, but this was much smarter to do.

Never ever ever EVER run your notebook while it is in a bag. That's a sure way to kill it by overheating (and possibly also to destroy the HDD and your data in the process, by jolting the HDD). When in a bag, any notebook should be in standby (sleep) or turned off.

This holds especially true for a notebook that already has problems with heat such as G1S.

Standby should be fine in the bag. Nothing should be running in standby. I hope so, at least. Maybe things changed in Vista but I don't see why they should.

Hibernation is also fine, of course (in fact that's what I almost always do myself).

Of course, buggy ATK/ACPI software and just poor programming may mean some applications may bring the laptop out of standby and that would be, needless to say, very very bad...

So maybe a good advice is to leave it running for a long time (e.g., overnight and also during the hours you usually carry the laptop) in standby, and see if nothing wakes it up. If not, then it's probably safe to carry it while standing by.

    Otherwise, hibernate or shutdown.

It depends. In Overlord, OC'd to 550/900 it doesn't get above 78C

In The Witcher, OC'd it doesn't get above 97C

In Dreamfall, however, OC'd it gets to 110C

    In 3DMark06, OC'd it goes to 97C

Given that with OC you are just above the throttle limit in 2 of the situations, wouldn't disabling OC help you remove the stuttering (assuming you have it, of course).

EBE, my G1S woke up once cause of some HP Printer software update. Came home found the thing in my bag with its fans on max. I checked the logs and it was on for ~30 minutes. I read on here about someone whose G1 screen melted after being in the same situation for 40 minutes. I disabled standby and it's Hibernate only now.

Yep, that's the type of problems that can arise with standby, unfortunately. Allowing this type of stuff to happen on a laptop that is designed to be carried in standby is horrendous design, in my opinion, but it happens. So one'd best use hibernate, or at least make sure nothing wakes up their computer before they put it in a bag...
