Although not Asus specific, I have the above optical drive. Using 8x discs but concerned that any b/ups I make may be screwed.

I had thought it was 8x but I guess not (maybe you can confirm).

In any case, does anyone know where I can get firmware updates or any other help from the board.

    Happy NY to All!! :)

Unfortunately, as I think you have already discovered, firmware updates for the TS-L532A are hard to find. Media compatibility has been a problem for as long as optical burners have been around and the challenge is to find media that your burner likes. Unless the media is listed as 8X in the firmware, all burners tend to step down the burning speed.

My own tests indicate that about half of the 8X media I have tried are recognised as 8X by the TS-L532A. However, burning at only 4X is not such a big loss. If you watch the burning progress you will see that the speed starts at 2.4X, moves up to 4X part way through and then burns at 8X for the last part (which you might not reach if the disk is not full). I understand that this is caused by the need to keep the power requirement of notebook burners to acceptable limits.

Thanks - u r right - My extensive searches have ended up with nada.

my biggest concern is that by using writable 8x dvd but burning on 4x drive, I may not write properly and lose/corrupt/etc the datab that I b/u . but so far so good

Burning at a slower speed should normally improve the quality. It is also prudent to verify your disks. This adds a few minutes to the overall burning time and gives you confidence that you can read the disks. However, this is no guarantee that others can also read them - yet another aspect of trying to find the most suitable media.

    Hi,
I'm finding the TS-L532A to be a pain in the ass. I've been having a heck of a time trying to find the right media, etc. The majority of -R discs (Maxell, Fuji) I've tried play on the W3V fine but won't play on my Sony standalone player (all burned at 4x). It's strange...I've never had this problem with my old desktop burner.

Gonna try +R next. Hopefully, it'll produce better results cuz it's getting kind of annoying burning all these semi-playable discs.

This worked for us and most everyone else i talked to.
Buy higher rated media. Like 16x. Buy a few different medias. Also try using the latest nero6 ultra with the patch. This works. Try it. Both mat****a and the ts drives burn at 8x just fine but you have to make an effort to find the right combination of media and decoder.

I'm using 16x Fuji on my TS-L532U and it burns no problem at 8x.
