    Hi.

I really want to buy myself a Asus EEE PC, I think it will be great for my needs! I want it for MSN messenging, Internet & Email, and the odd document.

I like the 4GB black version, and I am hoping to be able to order one just before the end of month!

Also, can I change it to the Xandros KDE desktop? I would rather have the lanuch menu instead of the tabs. Also can this be set so that when it starts up, it goes straight into that? Rather than having to reboot to get it.

    Thanks,

    Nick.

    P.S

I have done a little research!

You can put any linux distro or even xp on it, but the os that it comes with is optimized for the eeepc. If you do use another distro, you will have to tweak it a lot for the first few days and weeks to get it to perform like the original.

I don't mean install XP or a new distro, I am talking about can I change the bundled Xandros OS which comes with it?

The next version? I don't want to be waiting forever to find that it never comes, is there any good proof that strongly suggests another one will come.

    Thank you,

    Nick

Asus announced at CES this year that wimax and larger screen EEE's are coming. Since last year there have been rumors that the 2nd generation would launch in April with Core Duo processors and be fanless. Now, it is likely they will come with a Menlow platform processor or a Shelton platform processor. What I posted is the best real proof so far that I have seen.

Oh goodie. More toys to wait for. Now the cynic inside me says that given Asus's current track record, that "half of 2008" release date means November, it'll end up costing $100 more than the original $600 (€399), and have half of the SSD storage. Prove me wrong Asus.

Your right, it happened with the first-gen EEE, hope it doesn't happen again, I remember being so excited when it was first announced for $200 then changed to $400. :(

Maybe I just don't make as much money or my priorities are different, but $400-$600 isn't a 'throwaway' item for me. Granted, I am much more likely to plunk it down than $1000 or more, but the $150-$300 is more the 'buy without thought' range. Or so they say.

The 8.9" screen fixes one of the few problems of the Eee PC 701 and brings the resolution up to something most people would regard as a minimum for Windows XP. There is a minimal, almost undetectable difference in the size of the overall device.

    Product Notes
The Eee PC 900 is a larger screen version of the 701. It is due to launch in mid-April for 399 Euro. The web cam is slightly improved, the mousepad is larger and the memory is 1Gb. The screen will add some drain to the battery and this is expected to be in the order of 5-10%.

w00t! Small with a bigger screen! I'm definitely buying one.
Would be a great substitute for my Vaio when I don't want to carry something big around.
I just pray it comes out sometimes soon; I hate how they both delayed and increased the price of the first EEE pc, and hop they don't do the same again.

I gotta feel that because a lot of people are already complaining about the speculated increase in price, that they might as well just wait and slap a Silverthorne in it etc. The people that are already complaining because of the slight increase in price from the screen arn't going to buy it anyway and for a slight $$$ more it would give the rest of us a much more powerful notebook. I agree, this would be moving away from the 'throwaway' area, but I think a lot of people could swing 600 for an 'ultraportable' (I use the term loosely) that otherwise wouldn't have considered it because of the high costs of entering that market space. Cough, sony, cough.

I agree, I feel that it is a little excessive, but I already have set the money aside for two, I think we wish and hope, then manage...because not everyone can buy a TZ.

yup. hopefully the price wont be that STEEP. they should lower the existing EEE PC, so they can manage to sell both versions.
the only thing i am weary about the EEE PC so far is
    US Price
if you can upgrade the SSD

so far the only mentioned small laptop form factor that is competing against the EEE PC 900 is the ECS G10IL.

The Asus Eee PC could have a new challenger in the guise of the ECS G10IL.

The new sub-$500 notebook will come with a HSDPA 7.2 datacard built-in.
Although currently still in production, and details incredibly sketchy at the moment as to what else you will get in the box or when it will launch in the UK, what we do know is that it comes with a built-in webcam, three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and a 56Kbps modem. There is no optical drive but if its got HSDPA it's sure to come with Wi-Fi and most likely Bluetooth to boot.

Why the hell did they ever remove the modem from the EeePC, I'm seriously tempted to take the modem out of my C90S and stick it in my EeePC where it would do some good.

I also am not a fan of those keyboards like they have on the Ideapad, thin iBook and the G10IL.

Probably because no one ever uses a 56k modem these days. Wifi is becoming the new norm for high-speed internet and portability.

Finally ASUS did something right.. ;)

Well, believe it or not, not everyone lives in urban areas and additionally, not everyone can get broadband. Trust me, there are a LOT of places people can't get broadband. Or if they can, it's 1 way cable which i refuse to pay for. Full price + phone line cost for 1/2 the service. Sweet.

I know several dial up accounts just off the top of my head from people that have them as backups for there broadband or when they travel. You can still have alot of fun, heck I still have alot of fun over telnet (nothing like D&D groups of old).

That new little guy does look very cool. I think I could definitely beat(hopefully not taken in a blaspheming way) the eee. I am all for the next best. I think we tech people(speaking for myself, possibly the other guy in the opposing corner too) that all we need is something innovative; in this application, just small, semi-powerful, linux/xp capable drivers, wifi, ssd/+hdd, best keyboard for the size, and for the mobile traveler the latest phone stuffs.

most likely, i mean if the EEE PC ends up being $600+ then the ECS would definitely win if it was more widely advertised. the ECS is said (from article) to only be $500, and thats really not that bad.

also some things have to be sacrificed in order for the EEE PC to gain its small form factor and to have its low price.

I'm kinda dissapointed at the price and specs. For $600USD, they should at least fit a Conroe based Core 2 Solo in there, instead of the PIIIM based Celeron. The touchscreen was dropped, the only thing they added is the bigger screen. But that's with a price increase of $200, I'm not sure if it's worth it anymore. Maybe if they price it at $450-500, then it'll still be good value for the money spent.

Not sure if I got to be first on NBR, but I am certainly elated. News is that they are upgrading to Atom processors, yes to WIMAX and HSPDA, plus true SSD in their new EEEs. I have to say, if they can keep it under 800, they will do great. Some people will just get a cheap, larger laptop, but those that need the form/feature factor without the cost of a sony or other may get the new eee. damn, i was just going to post that, but if you read the last few lines, they plan to keep the "base" model at $499 so the higher end specs for the 9" ,might be a little bit steep

Gar, I know. I have just told myself I will buy it. I really do want the TZ, but that will never happen at any stage of my life. Even at $700 for the decked out version, I think, for me, it will be a good investment. I am about to go into college and all the desks I have seen will barely take the 15.4" I am handing down. Something EEE size would sit perfect on a book or binder and allow some relief (or notes) during the class, and should last those magic two years. I just hope they have it in pink, if not, I am dead as I promised one for my moms.

its ok, but isn't 10'' getting a bit big now? i mean im a fan of the 1024x768 res, but the price doesn't seem that low cost either. £299 to £699 seems kind of steep for a "low cost" notebook. it would probably be nice if it was 8" with 1024x768 without having those big boarders around the screen such as in the existing EEE PC.

the only plus (for me at least) is the fact that you can use a 2.5" HDD on it, especially with the new 500GB 2.5" drive, and will fit in EXISTING laptops, which means they did not change the thickness.

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/09/samsungs-500gb-2-5-inch-drive-arrives-alongside-22x-dvd-burner/
    [IMG]
Samsung promised it was coming in March, and here she blows. The Spinpoint M6 is the first standard-height 500GB 2.5-incher available, at a lean 9.5mm, meaning you can cram it into most existing laptops unlike the 2.5-inch 500 giggers from Fujitsu and Hitachi. Samsung's using some Perpendicular Magnetic Recording tech to cram everything in, stuffing three 167GB platters into the 5400rpm drive. The M6 goes for $299 and is shipping now. If DVD burning is more your pace, Samsung also just announced an "industry fastest" 22X DVD burner, the SH-S223. The SATA drive can stamp a 4.7GB disc in 12 minutes, and does dual-layer discs at a respectable 16X. No word on price yet for that one.
