Hey guys I've been researching laptops and found this forum not too long ago. I was surely going to purchase a refurb G50vt-X1. However recently I have been reading about the new model of G51 releasing tomorrow and for a great price!
Okay so here is the situation. I just got back from Gamestop Nd bought the Maximum Editon of Crysis that comes with Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis Wars. Here is the deal. I am still trying to choose between a laptop and personally due to apparent heat issues and low CPU, I still have the refurb G50vt-x1 at the top of my list. My question is, would the G50vt-X1 be a safer erred purchase based on what is known bout the G51? Maybe there is another laptop that's overall better? I am willing to spent up to a total of $1150.
Don't suggest the upcoming G71 because I do NOT want a big laptop, I want a 15" atleast. I am no enthusiast so it doesn't have to have amazing resolutions. I currently use a 1240x1028 or something and that res is more the fine to me, just to give an idea of my low standards.
So, basically, between the G50vtx1 and the new G51, which one would you suggest, and infact which will run Crysis better? The low processor of the G51 worries me, but the choice of oerclocking to a safe 2.25 GHz is always an option. So between those two, which is the better buy based on reliability and ability to handle crysis? And if neither, what's a good laptop? $1150 or less, and 15".
Sorry if I talk in circles guys. But I'm typing as I am walking in target on my iPhone haha.
So any help, suggestions, opinions? I'm purchasing my laptop the week of the 30th aka next week. Thanks!

I'm kinda split too between the G71 or G51. I know I need a small laptop for college but I lose a lot more performance from the G71
GPU is most of the times the bottleneck for gaming but with a low end processor like the 2 ghz it's the other way around for the G51. I would still recommend getting the G51 for you though. You can overclock for your games and it should be fine for atleast a year or 2 and by that time the current high end processors will be dirt cheap. In fact by that time you may end up buying a newer laptop altogether. -
What would run crysis better, G50vtx1 not oc'd or the G51 not OC'd?
The fact that the G51 has making heating issues Noe would make me fear overclocking the processor. -
the g51 would be better at crysis since it has a stronger gpu with more stream processors
-
I keep hearing that the processor is a bottleneck for the GPU so it isnt able to do what it truly can, so it made me think that regardless of a better GPU it wouldn't run too great...
I have seen videos of a 9800M GS running Crysis and it runs pretty well...
I was just checking out this laptop:
MSI GT627
Any opinions on MSI or this laptop specifically?
That main thing holding me back from the G51 is the fact that it is getting real hot with only 10 minutes of playtime.... I game in LONG sessions.
Then would might possibly be holding me back from the MSI GT627 or even the G50VT-X1 is because if the G51 and G71 with better GPU's can come out at cheaper prices, it makes me wonder that maybe I should wait...
I wouldnt be surprised if I end up getting the G71...I just dont like the size and weight :-\ My bro has an HP that is 17"-18" or so and is 8 lbs and he regrets getting such a large laptop and I am looking at it now and its huge...
Ugh...I am a very indecisive human being.
Any suggestions? Should I get the MSI GT627, wait for something, or take a dip and get one of the laptops I listed (maybe even the G71) -

Well, the G50vt gets similar temperatures as the G51, albeit about 5-10C less depending on the application or game.
I have been gaming and using mine fore almost a year with temps as high as 95C and I have never had a problem.
Personally I would buy the G51 and if the temps scare me, I would use a cooler, or perhaps undervolt it etc.
The 260M GTX is a nice upgrade, and definetly will last you a bit longer as gaming option than the 9800m.
G50 is still a nice laptop though, so whatever you chose you will be happy
I may not have a 260M GTX but since I run at GTS speeds, and the GTX is underclocked, and we have a low resolution, my scores and game performance is not that different than the G51 -

I would say that the G51 would still be better than the G50 in the long run. The processor won't be that much of a bottleneck for now and you can always upgrade it yourself in the future.
That being said, I would probably wait a couple of weeks till all of these heating issues with the G51 have been resolved. -
I'm sure the G50 reaches similar temps but sunny said after 10 minutes of crysis it got to high temps. That's what worries me, I game long sessions...
But yea if anything I will hold a few weeks and see what's up with the heating and maybe later shipments do better? Hopefully... -
Well if you look at sunny's last couple of posts in his review thread, it seems that the temps may be normal.
Apparently, Asus says that 90C is normal for this computer and after about an hour or so of playing Crysis, sunny got like 91C. Another guy with the computer got the same thing so they theorized that it may be the thermal paste bonding or the fans not kicking in full blast until that high of a temp.
Long story short, I'd probably wait a few days after the G51 is out on Best Buy but I'm personally not overly concerned about the temps right now.
