WhySoSerious - I have owned three ASUS laptops - currently have two. Biggest pro: Great build quality - probably the best in the price range. Biggest con: Except for the Eee PC series - fair to lousy battery life and difficult to find replacement batteries. Don't get me wrong - my next laptop will likely be an Asus (15-inch gaming) - but be forewarned about battery life.

GOOD: you get alot of high and good specs for a very nice price (look at the G50Vt for example)
customerservice is generally quite good (certainly if your in north america!)

Less good: build quality i genrally less good, but not bad (its mostly when comparing to higher priced Sony's and macbooks)

thats all I can think of right now...

If you are in the states you might be okay when buying Asus. If you are not in the states...have a look at the numerous Asus threads....

My F8Va-C1 has a battery life of ~2hrs in high performance mode and around 2,5 hrs in the battery savings mode. (I did this experiment with web surfing only. If you play games I think that will eat up the battery in an hour or may even be less...

How do you think the screens are, quality wise on the Asus versus say the HP's or the Sony's? Havng both, I've thought the screen quality, in the past, was a little less in the Asus line versus especially now with HP, whose quality seems to have increased. For gaming, I know no comparison with Asus, but for multimedia, I have thought Asus perhaps a little inferior?

My Asus F8S is down to less than an hour and a half for surfing with screen set at middle brightness. And, the battery is designed in such a manner that an extended battery is out of the question - and not offered. I have seen comments several places about Asus having power management problems - but certainly not with the Eee PC (which this is being typed on). Again - when I get the $$ together I am going to get one of the new G50VT-X2's (or its replacement) so I'm certainly not poisoned on Asus.

How long have you had it Jelly? Batteries are considered consumables and need to be replaced periodically.

The pros and cons vary great for different Asus models; nevertheless, poor to average battery life would be a relatively safe assumption for all current Asus notebooks.
Also the Asus X59SL is not available in North America, hence the lack of reviews on the forum. I would probably put the X series in the same class (budget/economical) as the F series or maybe even one step lower. The X series provide great bang for buck, but quality wise, it should be relatively similar to other consumer laptops such as the Dell Inspiron and HP Pavilions.

pros: Excellent thermal control on G2P. Good build quality. my 4yo punishes it everyday still works like a champ.

Cons: Battery life, DRIVER SUPPORT! they still only list the catalysts that were 'modified' by asus to run on the laptop from 11/06/06 BIOS is marginally older at 12/06. basicaly once its out the door your on your own for hardware drivers. I have to 'hack' inf for drivers. and if i had vista i would SOL since there are NO asus branded drivers for vista for the x1700! so basicly be warned on the type of hardware you purchase. if its obscure you will have to figure it out on your own. also Asus has been caught using keygens to use pirated software in the computers lately.

    Pros:
    - Great specs/price
    - Customer Service (and free 1 year accidental warranty! :D)
    - Not much bloatware (I did a fresh install anyways)
    - Good cooling (surprising for a 14.1" with a mid-range GPU)

    Cons:
    - The optical drive is flimsy
    - Battery life? (I thought it was ok, I get 2.5 hours doing office work and music) I am rarely away from an outlet, so I can't really speak too much about this. I've wanted at most half an hour more.
    - A bit heavy given the chassis size (14.1" weighs more than other 14.1" but less than all 15.4" that I've looked at)

Undertow - I hear you about replacing batteries - but my F8 is just 13 months old. My old Compaq x1000 - still trooping after five years this month - has just a little degradation in battery life. I still think Asus has power management problems - but I still like their laptops!!

In power save mode you'll be lucky to get 2 hours out of it, and gaming... well I don't recommend gaming off a battery any day, but if you chose to, I'd say you'd get about 50 minutes out of it.

Just retired and living on pension, but I am online a lot. My huge tower is killing my utility bill. As a long time Asus mobo owner, I want to consider the Asus laptop. I don't care about weight, size, or battery life, it's the power and performance that I need. Recommends?
If I am going to invest, I want a good one.

thanks [my first post here, looking forward to this site]

welcome on NBR, if youre looking for a laptop, you might better go to the more correct, which is the 'what notebook should i buy' here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

if your going for power though, I can recommend the G50/G71 series, alot of it is talked about on asus forum

I think i'm the only one who thinks that 2 and a half hours is great for battery.
I think because i never take my laptop anywhere and just use it in my house.

And i'm glad about the heating issues, my v5535 is always heating up really hot on my lap.

And not really happy about the drivers, but i'm sure I will find a way
