I had this problem before, I reinstalled windows a few days ago and it was illeviated. Problem is now back again. I have no idea what is causing it, any ideas?

Do you have anything hooked up to your external ports?

    Nothing, no.

Ive been trying to uninstall various programs to see if I can fix it, no luck. I dont have anything irregular installed. I will try to update the touchpad driver, although I am pretty sure this is not going to fix the problem.

    Well, I did a fresh install..AGAIN...

Problem is fixed once again. I am testing stanby and/or hibernate (both stanby and hibernate were experiencing this problem) after I install each and every program. Hopefully I can track it down to a specific program or windows update that is causing this problem. Perhaps its being caused from incorrect shutdowns, who knows.

If it were a hardware problem, I'd imagine I couldnt fix it from a simple reinstallation of windows, no?

Correct. If it was hardware related, you'd most likely see the same problem occur indefinitely unless the problem was fixed (physically).
Sounds like it could be a software/driver corruption or bug.

Keep us posted on what you find out!

Yeah, a clean install would fix a lot of problems. Although it may be a tediously long task, it's also a very simple solution. If you can afford to restore your system, then I would do it. Some dont want to because they've got a lot of stuff that they dont want to loose or don't want another tough task of backing up. A clean install would fix/clear a majority of problems posted on these forums.
