Hey, I've been researching laptops for a little while now as I'm looking to get a new one some time soon. My best option (up until now I think) was getting some kind of whitebook and customizing it. I created this set up:

    OCZ Whitebook 17" WUXGA
    -QX9300 Core2 Extreme 2.53GHz
    -Dual 3870s
    -4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM
    -Blu-ray
    -320GB 7200rpm HDD

Altogether the cheapest I could get this build for was around $3300 I believe.

Now the W90Vp has caught my eye...a $2200 price tag for 4870 X2...wow! True, the proc isn't the same, the RAM's slower (but with the potential for 8gigs I think???), and there's no Blu-ray or 1200P display.

I guess my question is, can I upgrade some aspects of the W90Vp so it's got the QX9300 and 8 gigs of RAM? And also can I install a Blu-ray player in it? I'm wanting the W90Vp because it fits better into my budget right now (thus the want for future proc upgrades etc.)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thanks!!

You can upgrade cpu and void the warranty at your own risk.
I believe you can buy/upgrade blu-ray drive later on.

I would say go for it! what's so worth with Quad core?

Wow thanks for the quick response!

Well I've heard that the quad runs games really well and multi-tasks with ease. I honestly don't know much about the T9600 though, is it a pretty good cpu?

Personally I would wait for ASUS to get all the bugs fixed on the W90Vp, a lot of people are reporting problems with them.
And yes upgrading the CPU should be possible down the road.

Why not look at the A1 model? it comes with 640 gb drives at 7200rpm, has blu-ray, and has a Quad core Q9000, which you can pull out, and put in a QX9300, then resell the Q9000.

Which is why I say its better to get a Q9100 from ebay with 1 year warranty, which is less than 400 quid; which is the same (cache) as QX9300 except from clock and locked multiplier. If turbo mode works, you have a 2.6 ghz quad.

How does the Q9000 compare to the T9600?

Depends on the programs you run. TBH I really don't see the point of having a quad in a notebook, because at most you're going to run on notebook are games and multi-media playback softwares. Unless you're looking into rendering / encoding on your notebook, having a quad core CPU is really useless and expensive.
