Hi everyone! I’m an Australian looking to get my first notebook. I’ve been doing plenty of research over the past few weeks and I keep coming back to ASUS. This forum has been a great help also. I’ve almost made up my mind and settled on this ASUS A6J:

    A6QJA-001P
    A6QJaT24DL11PG
    15.4” WXGA COLORSHINE
    DUAL CORE T2400 1.83G
    2x 512MB DDRII 533
    100GB (54Krpm)
    ATI X1600
    512MB Hyper Memory
DVD-Dual with Dual Layer and LightScribe
    802.11G 10/100
    XP PRO

    • Mobile Intel 945PM Express Chipset
    • Supports DDRII 533/667MHz SDRAM
    (upto 2GB of Memory)
    • Audio DJ (Plays CDs without booting up
    through Windows)
    • Card Reader (SD, MMC, MS, MS PRO)
    • Resolution: 1280 x 800
    • 1.3 Mega Pixel Camera
    • 4x USB
    • IEEE 1394 Firewire
    • Bluetooth
    • DVI-D Port
    • 2 Year Int. Warranty • 1x TV-Out
    • Battery Life: 3hr
    • Carry Case
    • Optical Mouse
    • Weight: 2.85kg
    $2,820 AUD

I intend on using this for basic applications such as Internet, Word / Excel etc, Audio, Watching DVD’s etc and occasionally connecting to the office by VPN. I’d like the machine to have a good ability to multi task as I like doing a lot of things at once. Portability is not a major issue as it will mostly be kept at home.

My question to you guys is: Is this a good machine for the price? Would you recommend something else or have I made a good selection?

Any recommendations or advice is very much appreciated guys.

    Thanks in advance…

It's definitely a powerful machine and it should serve you well.
Asus quality is definitely top notch; Go for it!

    P.S: We all care :)

Thanks AuroraS, your input is much appreciated.

I reckon its probably the most powerful machine ill get at the price and for what i will use it for i know it will be plenty powerful enough. I suppose the only drawback is that the A6J isn't as pleasing to the eye as some of the other models but when it comes down to it its what the thing can do, not what it looks like....

Have you seen it in person? Personally, I think it's pretty sleek in its own sense... especially in person. It definitely isn't "sexy" like the V6J, but then again, it's not nearly as expensive as the V6J either.

The A6J is a great work horse...I'm sure you'll be very happy with it :)

Looking at the specs it seems like a great unit. I would prefer a WSXGA screen to WXGA, but otherwise it seems good. I'm not familiar with the Australian dollar, but hopefully its a great deal for you.

Na i havent had a chance to see it in person and i dont think i will before i buy it either. Its a bit of a pain but i dont live in any of the capital cities which seems to be the only places that have ASUS notebooks on the shelves.

I have heard it looks nice in person though. I dont think ill be disapointed. :)

Last time i checked, the Aussie dollar was buying about 74 or 75 US cents. So my lappy for $2800 would be around about $2000 USD. Its doesn't surprise me that us poor Aussies pay more that you guys all the way down here,....

I just ordered one from Germany, same as yours, except: Core Duo T2300, 1,6G and HD 80G 7200rpm...

1560 euros including transport, Portuguese keyboard and fast disc...

I also got one from Germany a couple of days ago. Same 7200 rpm HD, only 2 GB ram and it was around 1700 euros. I got to say that it's probably one of the fastest machines I've ever seen. Build quality is great and it runs cool and almost totally quiet. The only thing that I'm not so happy about is the screen, not because it's WXGA but because of the pretty bad viewing angles (at least on my machine). This is not so noticable while working in Windows but it is when I'm watching a DVD for example.

In short, I think it's a great machine and I would definitely recommend it to everyone trying to get the most value for money.

I also considered getting 2Gb ram, but decided to wait to buy faster, cheaper, later...
