Thoughts on ASUS X83Vp-A1 or N81Vp-D2?

    Hi All,

I was wondering if any ASUS N81Vp or X83Vp owners would share their experiences with their notebooks? My current "work" machine is a Dell Latitude D630 (14.1" 1440x900 LCD) and I'm looking for something in a similarly sized chassis with a bit of reduced weight, but still have some "oompf" for some light gaming. I do have an ASUS N10J-A1 which I've been extremely happy with but I'm replacing it with an Acer 1810T and handing down the N10J to the girlfriend. (I'll definitely miss the discrete Geforce 9300M GS in it).

I thought about going the ASUS G51J-A1 or even the G60VX route... But if I'm going to do any type of "serious hardcore" gaming, I'd be doing it at home on the desktop. Other options that came up for me were the UL80Vt-A1 and X83Vp-A1... But after doing a DIY upgrade of my Dell Latitude D630 from a 1280x800 to a 1440x900 LCD screen... I have a huge "mental" block of going back to a 1280x800 screen of the X83Vp, which I realize is a 16:10 ratio screen, even though I think the 1366x768 16:9 screen would be more of a disadvantage. (I *heart* 16:10).

    Thoughts, suggestions, comments, welcomed!

    Cheers,
    Kermee

I'm wondering the same thing. My biggest question is about the quality of the x83vp's screen. Is it LED backlit? How's the contrast / colour saturation / and viewing angles (by comparison the n81's seem to be fine from what i've read, whereas the UL80vt seems to have bad viewing angles / poor contrast and washed out colours)

the problem is there aren't any reviews up the x83vp with the ati 4650, just reviews for lower specd the x83 with the 9300m gs

Personally, I like the 16:10" over the 16:9", and as for the "mental block", you would eventually get used to it, lol ;) . After a lot of research, I think you would be happy with the X83VP-A1's performance. I am seriously considering a purchase myself. You may have run across it already, but here is a link to a review of the Asus X83VP-A1 on this forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=444213&highlight=x83vp-a1

I'd like to revive this thread, because the OP has valid questions, and I have two of my own as well.

    1. With the new i3/i5/i7 processors, examples like the K42JR-A1 are looking nice. HOWEVER, I noticed the X83VP-A1 still has a much better GPU (ATI 4650), while the K42JR-A1 has the ATI 5470. Now the big question is, even with the Core 2 Duo, would the X83VP-A1 still have better gaming performance than the i5-equipped K42JR-A1? Any input on this would be great!

    2. I have heard that some of the N81VP series (specifically N81VP-D2) that the X83VP-A1 is based on seem to have a number of power/shutdown issues. My big question on this one is, has anyone run into power issues with the X83VP-A1, or is it a lot better in this regard than the N81VP laptops?

Or, you can wait for the N82. The X83 will still have a better gaming performance than the K42JR because the 4650 and 5470 aren't in the same league.
