    Hey guys,

    1) Which is the best bluetooth stack to use for my W3V? I'd like to transfer stuff to my Motorola phone (E815), how can I do this?

    2) Should I bother downloading the new drivers available on Asus' site? Are any of them actually going to improve anything on the computer?

    3) Can I use the Nero software that came with the computer to burn regular movie DVDs? I'm pretty sure the answer is no, so what can I use?

    4) What ever happened with the guy who was trying to come up with a vented cover for the HDD on this thing? It's HOT! :D (But seriously, I'm not smiling about this.)

If you guys can answer any of these questions, that'd be great. Thanks for the help!

    In regards to your questions,

    1) I assume you mean blutooth stick? The W3V comes with built in bluetooth, so its as simple as pressing a button. As for transferring files to your phone, I assume the notebook would just recognise your phone when bluetooth is on, although I am not really sure as I have not tried it myself.

    2) I recently purchased a W3N and I would recommend downloading the latest drivers - simply because of the performance gains and fixes that come with them.

    3) Not really sure about this one, ive always used dvd shrink and the nero plugin to burn dvd movies. You can download dvd shrink here: http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

    4) Your on your own with this one I think, as I have no idea. I swapped the HD in my laptop for a 60gig 5400rpm and although it does not run hot, its pretty warm!!

    Hope this helps a bit!

Well, I know I have bluetooth, but I thought the actual driver you use to operate it was called a "stack"? If it's not, stupid me. But I guess I should have asked which driver I should be using. So which driver should I be using?

I'll look into that DVD shrink deal. Thanks!

Yeah, its a bluetooth stack, and I think you have to use the toshiba one that is included with the computer. I may be wrong, but it shouldn't allow you to install anything other than what was included on the drivers disk.

The w3v gets hott. Just like every other laptop WITH THE SAME EXACT TEMPERATURES give or take a few degrees. The whole "my harddrive overheats" is just ridiculous. Someone made it up and everyone else who is paranoid about their brand new very expensive notebook breaking thought they had it. You cant use nero to burn a movie. You can use a number of the aftermarket rippers. I think alcohol120 is one.?? Among many others

    Hey Eddie,

I'm not afraid of the drive breaking, I don't suspect that's going to happen. And I'm sure plenty of others do get hot like the W3V, but I just thought maybe the person talking about making a cover with air vents had actually done it.

    Thanks.

He did not do it because he realized 2 things.
    1. The drive will get to that temperature give or take a few degrees RAGRDLESS of the enclusure its in unless its completely open ofcourse
    2. Nobody would warranty his notebook if he altered the case, not his dealer not asus.
It was not a smart idea for him to mention it at all. All it did was create a hard time for dealers with questions like "will my drive overheat and break if i buy he w3v". You really have to keep in mind that alot of posters on forums are extremely picky people which explains why they are on review forums to begin with.

Just a heads-up about using BT to transfer to your phone. I have both the W3V and the E815. The E815 won't allow you to transfer via BT unless you edit "seem" files on your phone. To do this you would need a USB data cable and some software, so it's not a quick and easy thing. Google for "E815 edit seem" for more info on this.

As for question 3, as someone said the easiest (as in quickest and cheapest, but not necessarily best quality) option is to download DVD Shrink to create your DVD files, then use Nero to burn the movie.

    To answer your questions....
1: Well, it appears that this ques. has already been answered - I was going to warn you about the E815 too. I've got a V710 Motorola for Verizon - piece of crap - it has bluetooth. Might as well call it Verizontooth - you can't use the btooth for anything other than a headset.

2:Well, I don't think most of the drivers are going to make that much of a difference. However, I would suggest getting your video drivers updated. Use the latest ATi drivers - you don't need the ones from Asus. Normally, theyre a month or two behind.

    3:To burn DVD's, use CloneDVD.

4: I found that purchasing a cooling pad really helps cool down the notebook. On my last laptop, the hard drive ran hot - 58 degrees at idle. Ouch. So, I bought a cooling pad, and the hard drive ran at 43 degrees. Much better!

Hope that helped resolve some issues. :) :asus: :centrino:

    Thanks guys,

Yeah, I knew all about Verizon and their crappy customer service policies before I got this phone. I was up for "new every two" and I bought it online, so the phone was free. Even if the bluetooth never works, at least I didn't pay anything for it.

I do remember reading that you can change the files you want to share with the phone to some strange extension, and then apparently they can be put on the phone? We'll see...

Just to add one more thing about using the updated drivers. My W3V started to freeze in the past 2 or so weeks, which is about a month after I got it, at random points, on and off full CPU load, it didn't matter. I found that searching through these forums that other ASUS owners were having the same problems and what fixed it was installing the updated drivers for the network card. So, in short, update the network card drivers, if you are having the same problems.
