Was just pricing some laptops not long ago, and after configuring a S96J on Gentechpc, I was able to get these specs, for a nice total of $1,256

    CPU: Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83 GHz 64Bit 2M 667
    RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR-2 667 SODIMM (2X1024)
    HD: Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 80GB 7200rpm S-ATA
    Internal Wireless Card: IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless 3945 Tri-mode 802.11a/b/g
Warranty: 1st Year GenTech, 2nd Year Intel Limited Warranty
    Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
    Color: Original Color: Silver
    Display: 15.4" WXGA 1280 x 800 Color Shine (Glare)
VGA: ATI Mobility X1600 256MB PCI Express
Optical Drive: 8 x DVDRW Dual Layer Slot-Load
    Camera: Built-in Camera
    Availability: In Stock

To me, this seems like the logical choice. The only hangup I have is whether or not the Z96 (WSXGA) is worth the extra 150 or so. Also, should I pull the trigger now, or wait until Santa Rosa/DX10? For 1250 though, to me, this is too good to pass up. Either convince me i'm right or if you wish, throw out some other ideas for me! :)

When comparing Z96j to S96j, the difference is the higher resolution screen and bluetooth, that the Z96j has.

Gaming on the S96j for the most part will be better since it has a lower native resolution.

If you need more real estate by all means get the Z96J, I have written a review on the Z96J and i've tested the scaling ability of the screen is its seems to be good.

With regards to bluetooth, do you have the need, or in the future want to get bluetooth devices, then that would also sway your opinion.

Now the waiting game, to buy or not to buy. We can expect 2-3 months before we start to see new releases of Santa Rosa laptops. DX10 GPUs were slated for H2, but seem to becoming out early so that's good news too.

Also what kind of work will you be doing with your notebook, school? Graphic Design? Do you think you can wait? Currently yes this is a good deal if you don't want to wait.

That is quite a good deal, but If you can wait, then do so. As for the S96j vs the Z96j... It would be a good idea to check two similar screens out in person and see what you like better..
