I have a Toshiba SD-R6373 DVD burner, which I just updated the firmware on from 1730 to 1732. I did this cause I was having problems burning data to DVDs, esp 8X DVD+ which wasn't recoginsed by the drive, but this new firmware was supposed to fix this. It did in that now I can burn to 8X media, BUT I can't get it to burn anything correctly, except CDs. I use high quality verbatim +/- media (MCC 002 and 004, and Ritek G04, as well as some cheap as 4X- media. They all get thru the burn ok, but fail verification, the computer then becomes unstable and I sometimes get BSOD. There are a few posts out there that this drive is crap, just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems?
Do you think that a crap burner could cause BSOD?
Thanks

I've got the M6 but with a Toshiba 6372 DVD. I do have the same kind of problems as you describe. I also flashed the firmware from the Toshiba site. Here is a thread describing my issues:

I'm living with it and just using the CompUSA 4x DVD+R disks that seem to work ok.

Sorry I miss typed a 3 instead of 2, I too have a SD-R6372.
Its good to know I'm not the only one with issues. I just ordered a new burner, a pioneer DVR-K04. It looks quite good, slot loading, 8X and DL. Will let you know if its any better!
Which firmwear did you upgrade to?
the 1732 or the other one?
I can't seem to burn anything now that I've upgraded.

Ok its not quite as bad as I thought, just managed to burn a DVD successfully. Went back to JVC 4X - media (prodiscS03), which had worked prior to firmware upgrade. These still seem to work.
Will post how things progress.

Yes, it was revision 1732.
I don't think updating the firmware made the drive faster. It may be more compatible with some 8x media, but 4x is likely a safer bet.
Are you upgrading the internal drive or getting an external? I would like to know how it goes if it's an internal replacement.

Good luck with the install!
The drive looks nice, but doesn't seem available here in the US. []

I'm upgrading the internal drive, ie replacing the crudy toshi one, with this new pioneer one (http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/dvdwriters/dvrk04/)
Its only just been released and was developed by the Aust divison of pioneer. The specs look good and price wasn't to bad either. I'm paying ~Aus$260 inc shiping (about the same price as an external DL burner). Its on back order at the moment but should be here in around 2 weeks. Will post pics of how the instal goes.

Well I changed my mind, and have decided against replacing the internal drive. The main reason is that I have been unsuccessful in removing the plastic finishing from the toshi drive which is specific for the M6N casing. Thus I would have trouble installing/selling off this old drive, and the new drive would not look as good due to the missing plastic. Instead I'm going to get a standard desktop pioneer 16X DL 108 drive + external housing, which are both on sale and in stock (was a min 2 week wait on the DVR K04). I see this as a more flexible & stable solution for burning and its also cheaper by $50 !
Oh I've tried a few more discs and so far I'm 2 from 4 on the JVC's, I think a 50% success rate is pretty bad esp on expensive quality media.

I've been considering an external drive as well. I may go that way, particularly since dual layers are getting pretty affordable.
Do you have CompUSA in Aus (CompAUS [)])? The most reliable burning I've done has been on the housebrand CompUSA 4x +R disks. (Go figure!)

No CompUSA here in Aust. But thats cool as we have plenty of other places that offer cheap prices. I got the pioneer A108 with a thermaltake external case, works great over usb2, I've had no problems with any of the DVDs yet. Its burned my RitekG04's, verbatim MCC02's, JVC and even a crappy noname brand cheapie. Most of these wouldn't work at all with the toshi drive.
So to any others out there who burn alot of DVDs I stongly suggest against getting/spending $$$ on the internal DVD burner and spend the money on an external, it will pay for its self in saved coasters in no time.

I got a DVD-RW R6372 to install in my Toshiba A45-S250 but i cant do it works. It seens that the BIOS dont recognize it how if there wasnt any drive in the notebook.
Anyone know what's the problem ?? Do I need to flash the DVD-RW firmare or the notebook BIOS ?

the sd-r6372 is configured as cable select (CSEL), chech the old drive and see if it is configured as master/slave (M/S), if so you have to ground pin 47 ( short pin 47 to pin 45 ) on your new drive to make it work. If you are getting 'IDE #1 ERROR' search GOOGLE with this error message for mor information.
