After receiving my V1S and trying to speed up vista as best as possible it's made me realize just how limited my knowledge is.

I think it would be great if V1S owners and those more knowledgable than myself to contribute to this thread so hopefully our V1Ss can run as lean as possible.

Suggestions are obviously welcome but to start with I think it would be great if we could having posts in some of the following areas:

    HARDWARE:
    Tuning bios (if possible)
    Drivers
    Wifi Tweaking
Graphic Card Tuning (for those that game and those that don't)
Sound Card Tuning (is it possible to remove the realtek software and just have vista manage sounds etc)
And any others i've forgotten or missed

    VISTA:
Tuning vista for fastest possible performance
Removing bloatware (Please list each item including what it does and what impact it will have by removing it - if it's better to leave it then please explain why)
    Decreasing boot up time
and any other tip and tweaks aimed at speeding up the slow behemoth that is vista.

It would be great if those with the knowledge can help use without to have our V1S run as quick and sleek as possible.

As a start I have removed a lot of bloatware. This was prior to starting this thread so I have not made a list as such.

I have disabled UAC to rid those damn pop ups everytime I try to do something
Control Panel/User Accounts/Turn Uuser account control on or off.

I have removed all the locations in Control Panel/Indexing Options as far as I could tell this thing was just accessing my hard drive near constantly.

I have disabled system restore, I have never used it so just my personal preference.

Also I have done the standard things list perform Disk Cleanup, Cleaned Registry using Registry Mechanic and DeFraged my hard drive.

Thats the best your going to do unfortunately, I would strongly recomend uninstalling Norton internet security if you havent done so already. There is very little you can change in BIOS that would affect performance and the same goes for wifi, You need the RealTek drivers and software to have Audio. You might want to keep Turbo Cache on as apprently it _might_ speed up your system after a month or two of use and Vista SP1 might also help with this. If you wish to overclock the the GPU you are welcome to but I would advise against it. Personally I am more concerned with quietening and cooling down the V1s, To do this I need to code C# ACPI for NHC unfortunately I dont know C coding, Only Java.

Actually the first thing I did was uninstall Norton.

I have posted the following question in another thread but I think it's more appropriate here.

I have tried playing DVDs using my own retail version of Nero which is fully upto date. The playback is choppy and stuttering.

Is there anything I can do, are there graphics card settings I can adjust?

I use my machine for all sorts of things including DVD playback. I very only play games once in a blue moon.

    Any advice welcome.
    Thanks

I've read in one of the other threads that one of the Asus utilities has a tendency for causing video or audio stuttering, but I can't remember which one. May have been the Asus Security utility (fingerprint stuff), but don't quote me on that. It was in one of the G1S Bloatware threads on here.

This is what I did in Vista to speed up my G1S (you've done some of this already).
    - Do a clean install. Initially, I avoided doing a clean install as there wasn't much bloatware so I just uninstalled a bunch of stuff. Later, I was forced to do a reformat (my fault not the laptop) so I went ahead and did a clean install and only installed the ATKs, direct console and updated drivers. It runs noticeably better and faster.
    - Turn off search indexing, UAC, system restore, hibernation
    - Turn on write caching. Go to Device Manager, Disk Drives. Right-click on your SATA hard drive and click Properties. Click the Policies tab, and click Enable Advanced Performance.
    - In control panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows Features on or off, uncheck:
    Indexing Service
    Remote Differential Compression
    Tablet PC Optional Components
    Windows DFS Replication Service
Windows Fax & Scan (unless you use a modem for faxing
Windows Meeting Space (unless you use the Live Meeting Service)
    - In Control Panel, Administrative Tools, System Configuration, Services Tab, uncheck:
Offline Files (unless you’re using Offline File Sync)
Tablet PC Input Service (unless you have a tablet PC)
    Terminal Services
Windows Search (If you have already disabled indexing)
Fax (unless you’re using a fax modem)
    - Clean up startup programs. Type msconfig, look in the Startup tab. With the above tweaks, I now have Vista starting up with under 50 processes running.
    - I had a flash drive handy so I used readyboost. Can't hurt.
    - Use Vista Basic instead of Aero

redzapper, will turning off Terminal Services disable the ability to use Remote Desktop to connect to the laptop from another PC? I don't see as much need to use it this way, and would usually remote into another PC FROM my laptop, but I was just curious.

Yes. You'll need terminal services to remote desktop to the laptop but not if you're using the laptop for outward connections.

That's what I figured, since it has been based on TS, but since I'm still new to Vista, I didn't know if that had changed at all. Thanks.
