I turned on my G51 this morning, left the room and then when I came back found that the screen was all rainbowy and it said the graphics driver had stopped working. My cursor wouldn't move so I had to do a force restart. Upon rebooting I got the following BSOD
![]()
I keep getting the BSOD everytime I restart. I can get into safe mode fine which I did. I then uninstalled the nvidia driver and rebooted. It rebooted normally into Windows. (*) Windows then started to automatically install the graphics driver and said a reboot is required for proper installation. If I reboot, I get the BSOD again.
I'm currently back in the stage marked * except I clicked reboot later. So if I reboot now, I'll just get the BSOD again. I've unplugged all USB devices, discs but to no avail.
This better not be a GPU problem...god damn. My G51's been working fine then this just randomly happens. Any ideas (before jumping to "send it back to Asus")?

Did W7 force a recovery/restore?
Try booting it a few more times.
I know it's not much to go with but it happened to me once after trying SETFSB, I deleted It in my folders (safe mode)and it rebooted in recovery mode after a few more tries. -
As in force a system restore? Nope. I tried a system restore myself but I just get the BSOD still. Hmm, I've rebooted around 8 times already.
Oh and I don't overclock my CPU or GPU. Only undervolt the CPU which I've been doing since getting it 3-4 months ago. -
The 0x116 error points to a GPU error. Try using the newest NVIDIA driver available from their website instead of letting windows automatically installing its version.
-
I originally did have the newest driver installed when I first got the BSOD. I can't install the newest driver anyway because I need to have rebooted once for Windows to allow me to (since it auto installed a driver), but doing so will give me a BSOD. The only way to boot into Windows normally without getting a BSOD is from a reboot after UNinstalling the driver. As soon as the computer boots however, Windows starts auto installing the driver which I can't cancel and the process repeats.

Hmm. It's odd that your compuer auto-installs drivers. Did you try a deleting the drivers, rebooting into safemode and cleaning out all display-related files with something like Driversweeper? The computer can't auto-install if there's no files to be had. -
I'll try that now. It's auto installing the driver like it does to many devices on Windows 7 using 'Automatic Driver Installation'. Like when you put in a new USB stick or some other USB device, Windows will auto install using drivers that come with Windows. Doesn't it usually do that for everyone? Like when you fresh install Windows 7, it'll automatically install drivers for most of the hardware including the video card.
Edit: Ok I uninstalled the driver, rebooted into safemode. Even in safemode Windows auto installed the driver. I ran driversweep and cleared the drivers/registry entries and rebooted to normal Windows. This time, no notification popped up at the bottom right saying 'new hardware detected'. But in 'uninstall or change a program', the nvidia driver was listed. This time though I was able to install the newest driver. Rebooted but still got the BSOD (as expected since I had the newest driver when this all started). -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The nVidia driver was still there? Try doing the process a couple of times so it reads as generic VGA adapter, and then install a new driver.
Although a tiny part of me thinks it might be a naughty GPU that's the real culprit. -
Did u try reinstalling a New copy of windows 7?
i mean, make a format and reinstall... and see what happens! -
Hmm I might try that if I have no choice. Something tells me it won't make a difference though.
-
Ok I just reformatted and as expected, I'm still getting the BSOD...

I also thought it was the display driver based on the BSOD info. While I was trying to install the GPU drivers from Nvidia I also had Windows try and install the generic Asus GPU drivers. To fix that I disconnected from the internet. The first step in the right direction is to see what the Event Viewer has to show about your BSOD.
I wish you the best. -
Would you be able to tell me what I'm meant to look for in event viewer? I've never used it before.
Also, where are the turbo gear display drivers? They're not listed under 'Programs and features'.
At least this is some news. Thanks -

Look under Custom Views -> Administrative Views. Look for an error message to cooresponds to about the time you got a BSOD.

I've owned a G51 in the past and I know it had the ASUS OC programs. I'm not sure why yours does not........hmmm....
If I was you I would do a clean W764bit install and download only the must have drivers from Asus. Then I would install 195.62 from Nvidia. And last but not least I would install Nvidia Tools 6.05. Make sure you delete your Windows.old file to make sure you don't bring any problems with you into your clean install. To do this run disk cleanup and delete previous OS installations.
If these instructions don't fix your BSOD issue it's time to call Asus to get a RMA.
If you do decide to RMA your lappy let me know how it goes. I'm considering sending in my G71GX because my left mouse click is becoming less tactile. Which is strange because I barely ever use it. I use my Razer mamba.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
I think the kernel power error is because it's not shutting down properly after the BSOD. Sometimes I have to force restart if it takes too long.
Well when I reformatted, the first thing I did before installing anything was install the nvidia driver to make sure nothing else is causing the problem. Straight away I got a BSOD though.
I think it might be a hardware problem because it just happened out of nowhere. I called Asus tech support today and they told me to drop by or send it in to my local service centre so I think I'll just do that. Not convenient at all to lose my laptop for at least 2 weeks but what can I do. I've wasted enough time trying to fix the problem.
Thanks for your help anyway. -

Let me know how that goes. I'm wondering how much they charge for a non-warrantied repair job.
-
Yep. I'm still under warranty though. I've still got my P7350 so I'm going to have to put that back in. Plus I'd better remove all those copper heatsink blocks I added.. *sigh*

Did you buy a Best Buy Warranty?
Darn. I didn't want to be the first to try a Best Buy repair job, haha. -
lol I'm in Australia and I bought mine new on eBay from the US. The seller bought it from Best Buy though and provided me with the receipt. It's a 1 year warranty but I don't know anymore than that. Strangely, the Asus tech support guy I talked to didn't even mention that I need to send the receipt along with the laptop. He just asked me whether I bought it in Australia or overseas (probably because it's a Best Buy model and they don't have Best Buy in Australia).
-
@bboy1
I too have had that particular bsod screen relating to the gpu drivers, and i have tried everything already mentioned.
In the end i found out that the gpu itself has failed, and i had to get a new one.
Once i did that everything worked perfect as it should.
Sorry to tell u this, but u probably have the same problem with your gpu.
Good luck -
I got this exact error and later discovered my GPU died.
-
Thanks guys. At least I know there's no point trying to fix it now.

Asus just RMAed my lappy because of the problems that I mentioned from my previous posts. It's kinda lame that we have to come up with our own shipping materials but on the plus side of things it's really nice that Asus ships through Fed-Ex overnight. I really hope that this RMA process is stress free.
I had to RMA a Toshiba lappy last year and when it came back, it looked as if Battle Cat had done the repair himself!! There were 2 deep scrathces on the lid. It was so bad that I sold it because of the damage done by Toshiba/UPS Logistics.
Would I be out of line to ask them to handle my lappy with care as far as scrathes are concerned in a letter?
Earlier today, a few minutes after I booted up my PC I started to watch a video on youtube. About 6 seconds into the video my PC became unresponsive and started to make a VERY LOUD buzz sound. I could move the mouse icon around but nothing else.
My errors were Exactly the same as the one you(bboy1) posted earlier. I had a few of my friends that own Alienware M17x's and work in the geeksquad identify my problems as a bad GPU or going bad GPU just like the other members have said in this topic.
What sucks is that the agent that I spoke to told me that they were going to delete my HDD as procedure to troubleshoot this issue. She said after everything is wiped they would then run a diagnostic to see if a replacement GPU/Motherboard would be nessasary.
I think that they should figure it out in its current state. I noticed that when I upgraded from 186.62 drivers to 195.62 my GPU ran 10 degrees hotter at idle(59). If they wipe everything then run their diagnostic then how will they know for sure that they are putting the same strain on the 260M that I do that causes the errors in my Event Viewer based on a failed or failing GPU? -
I wouldn't say you'd be out of line for asking. I feel the same way about sending mine in. I take real good care of my things and my G51 doesnt have a single mark on it (I'm pretty anal about condition and keeping things clean lol) so I'd be annoyed to see any damage when getting it back.
That's the good thing about Dell when I had an M1530. The tech would come round to fix it and I could keep an eye on the process.
I sent my G51 off today. I'll just hope for the best.
P.S...I'm typing this on my Wii lol...tryna get my old old computer up and running. -

At the moment I am backing up my games saves & files.
I recieved the email from Asus but have yet to get the Fed-Ex shipping label. How long does it take to get it through email? -
Eh I wouldn't know since I'm in Australia. They didn't mention anything to me about return shipping.
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
I just got my email with shipping label. What's confusing is that the agent I talked to last night said it was overnight shipping but the agent I just spoke with to get the label said it was Fed-Ex ground. I hope it's not ground because ground takes Fooorreeevvveeer and I'm in the process of moving in about 7 days......hmmm......
Well I'm off to Fed-Ex to ship my G71. ttys. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
When I mailed it earlier today I confirmed with Fed-Ex that it is Fed-Ex ground shipping and that it may take up to 9 or more days for them to receive.
Lame
When I first encountered Asus tech about the RMA process I was told I would have my G71 back within a week.
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
I just read 8 pages here about how awful Asus RMA is.... I hope all goes well. I wrote a pretty elaborate letter with my lappy explaining what is wrong and to not scratch my precious....lol. Thus far Asus has been decent on the phone
I will report back once I receive my lappy with my review of Asus RMA. -
I have yet to hear anything from them regarding mine. The service centre is probably an hour to an hour and a half from my place by car but it was cheaper and more convenient to just send it. They should have gotten it the day after I sent it. I also put in a note explaining what's wrong. Didn't ask to be careful with it. Hopefully whoever repairs it will get that impression though based on how new it's going to look to them. Then again, with the amount they have to repair I have a feeling they're going to be too impatient to handle all laptops with care. Let's hope I'm wrong.

haha yeah same here. But I'm in Australia
I'd have to wait for a reseller to stock them that ships to Australia and can also lower the value.
I know one site that can do that for the G73JH-A2...so just hope they can stock that best buy one in the future.. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
Today I was sooo close to buying a G73...lol -
Yeah the BB version would still cost me $1455USD from a reseller to get it shipped here..
-

I live in Anchorage AK. Bestbuy allows us to price match with Bestbuy online and since we have no sales tax we make out better than the lower 48. I'm also a Bestbuy Silver Rewards member and get free standard shipping. I have around 300.00USD in credit and rewards here and there, so 900.00USD with no tax is looking pretty good right now
The only thing that bothers me is that ALOT of people in the forums have or had defective GPU's in their G73. Which doesn't really suprise me. In the last year I have bought more than 8 laptops. My next laptop needs to last me another 2 years. Even though my G71 handles Bad Company 2 slighty above average...if Bad Company 2 is a glimpse of things to come I can see the GTX 260M at 1440 x 900 beginning to show it's age
In most current PC games I can run upto 8XAA and run at a decent frame rate. But in a few newer games I have to set it to 4XAA to maintain a smooth frame rate. These same games I'm hearing that when ran on the G73 they can be maxed out with 70-80 fps.
Anti Aliasing along with a high frame rate is very important to meand that is the reason why I'll probably not be contempt with a lappy for to long
-
Bah, I just called them to ask on the status. They said they've received it but it's yet to be booked in for a repair and that usually it'll take at least 3 weeks from the date of being booked. So it's been there for 1 week yet they haven't even booked it. Man, what a joke. They've probably got a whole stack of laptops lined up and just 1 guy repairing them one at a time..
1 month without a laptop is ridiculous. Damn me and my need for gaming. If I didn't play games then I would have just gotten another Dell because of their next day on the spot service.
The wait itself is making me want to just go out and order a G73JH lol. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
wow!! That sucks. I called 30 minutes ago and the agent told me that it's still under repair and that Asus normally fixes laptops within a 3 day time period...so I should probably check back tomorrow. I'm surprised that it's been under repair for 2 days and all they can say is "repairing". If a tech is repairing laptops for a huge company like Asus I'd expect him to be done in about 2 hours at most. I hope they finish tomorrow and start my long process of waiting for Fed-Ex ground. If I purchase a G73 from Bestbuy I'm going to buy a Black Tie Warranty to avoid this slow RMA process. I hate being left in the dark about how long or what's going on with my lappy. I hope they don't reinstall Windows 7. I have soooo many games installed and setup the way I like them
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
Mine is scheduled to arrive back to me today before 4:30pm AK time. I'll update with my review of Asus RMA.
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
I just received my g71 back and all they did was install the OS(Vista) again. I have Windows 7 from Asus....remember? ... They didn't even fix my left click button. How lame. Asus has the WORST RMA service I have ever encountered. I even typed a letter explaining the problems and all they did was reinstall the WRONG OS. My 7 year old daughter could do that! The only thing they will do is another RMA with expedited shipping. Asus sucks
I even asked them if I can take it to Bestbuy, one of their resellers and direct bill Asus. They still insist on a RMA at my inconvenience.
I'm going to go buy a G73 with a Black Tie Warranty from Bestbuy or an Alienware with in home repair. I'm soooo dissapointed with Asus. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
Update: Today I purchased a G73JH from Bestbuy and sold my G71GX. I also purchased a 3 year Bestbuy Black Tie warranty. Hopefully I'll never have to deal with Asus RMA with my warranty. I also bought an extra 500GB 7200 RPM HDD for when I can get my hands on a Asus HDD bracket. Tomorrow I'm going to buy that extra 2 gigs for a total of 8. Some people say that their G73 came with 1033 mine came with 1333 ram
-
Well that sucks skygunner. Somehow that was the kind of scenario I was expecting though. I guess I should expect the worst then.. How was the condition? Any damage?
It's been 2.5 weeks now. Still not a word from them. I've had to suffer the past weeks by using my old P4 1.8ghz, 512mb ram Dell desktop. 8 years old, still works but damn it's slow as hec by today's standards. Freezes if I try and do too much multitasking, as expected. Don't know how I used to use it lol.
Whether I get a G73JH depends on how my G51 goes. I'm worried getting one would give me more problems though based on the tonne of problems people are having on these forums. The last thing I'd want is to have to wait another 3+ weeks..
People often whinge and whine about how Dell service sucks, but honestly I can't imagine any other company being better. Their XPS (and alienware) premier service warranty kicks butt. 1 day repair vs 3+ weeks? Yes please. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
There was no damage. I did notice that the backside of the screen was not clean like the way I do things but there were no scrathes. My G73 now has 8GB's of DDR3 1333 ram and a 2nd 7200 HDD making it the RX09 model. I have yet to have any problems with my G73 and am happy with it's performance. I'm glad I got the lower res screen because I've seen lag in fps on my friends A1 that he returned for a more future proof RX05. The build quality is fantasic with no flex to be found. The only thing negative that I can find is that I DO NOT like the left/right rocker bar and I don't like how the speaker grate attracts lent & dust. I'm always using my Kirby Sentria and scotch tape to remove the lent. But other than that I don't know how I lived without the i7 and 5870....lol
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
I'm still looking for the assembly to house my second hdd. I exchanged my G73 because the demo on display had a much better left/right rocker bar that was smooth as molasses. My original G73JH had a crappy feel to it. My new one does not. It's perfect so far. Now I've got sooooo many things to install to get the G73 up to par. If I was you I would get one to because the performance of the i7 & 5870 clown the C2D & 260M.
The one thing I can say about the 260M is that I believe most games are optimized for Nvidia. I never saw screen tear with v-sync enabled & tripple frame buffer on my G71. But on the G73 I can see it here and there. It's annoying but I'm slowly getting use to it. -
Asus called me today to say that it's been repaired. Graphics card was replaced and that I should get it Monday or Tuesday. So that's exactly 4 weeks..
-
Received it today. No damage. Wasn't reformatted so everything was still there. Graphics card was just replaced.
-
For God's sake. Turned it on this morning and Windows froze while artifacts appeared. Forced restart then got a BSOD. Can get into windows but there are artifacts all over the screen. I haven't even had it for 1 week and the graphics card's failed on me again. I have studies and other important things to do. I can't afford to have this taken away from me again for another 4 weeks. This is a joke. I can't believe this.
-
Ok so I received it back today after having sent it in for the second time. They replaced the motherboard and GPU this time incase the motherboard had a problem. This time however, I noticed that the bezel has fine scratches all over it...as if they've wiped it down with a rough rag.. I'm starting to not care anymore though... just want this damn thing to not fail on me again..
How's your G73JH skygunner? I'm still considering selling this.. but not entirely sure..
Turned on G51vx-rx05 this morning and got BSOD (graphics/driver problem?)
