So this is my first Vista powered machine (BB G51) because of all the headaches from Vista. Loved XP. But after about 1.5 weeks of fixing vista headaches it is now actually pretty darn good. Go figure. Right now (knock on wood) it is perfectly stable, runs everything I want flawlessly and with the exception of the start menu itself...I actually kind of like it.
So since it's running flawlessly and I'm extremely happy with it I'm a little nervous mucking it all up by trying to install Win7 when the free upgrade comes.
So is it worth it?? What are the best differences??

I just upgraded on my G50 today, was running Vista before.
It's not 'WAY' better than Vista, but so far I see that you boot up faster, uses less processes and ram aswell. -
One minus is if you use the classic start menu in vista i didnt but its not an option any more so if your not a big fan of the new start menu you wont have an option otherwise but to use it.
But I use the new start menu search so many times on vista and now 7 that it is okay to me. 7 seems faster overall but people who dont like change i dont see a problem sticking with vista or xp. -
It's what VISTA should have been when it first came out.
Is it that much better with all the new VISTA service packs?
A little, as other members have posted boot and shut down times are faster and system feels a little speedier.
To me the big advantage W7 has over VISTA is User Account Control settings(UAC) can be shut off completely and forgo the usual prompts that popout when using programs in VISTA. -

UAC can be shut of in vista with some command lines.
-
UAC can be turned off in vista via user accounts->turn off User Account Control. takes two ticks and a reboot..

Actually UAC is better with Win7, even if you leave it at default level it does not bug you as much as it used to with Vista. In Vista the first thing I always did after new install was to disable UAC.
I like Win7 as there was a problem on my M50Vm in Vista that I was never able to resolve with all different driver updates and with service packs. In Vista I had very often BSODs when system went to sleep.
On Win7 I don't have that issue anymore.
Out of box it is more stable on my Notebook than Vista was with its service packs. -
UAC's handy, but annoying.
Vista is good but not the greatest,
Windows 7 doesnt feel like a finnished vista at all, more like an upgrade.
Both very stable, although windows 7 is very good concidering its basically a brand new OS with (no flaws at the moment) well i havent found. -

Windows 7 is Vista Service Pack 3.
Nothing brand new about it. -
i didnt know that, this is huge drawback for me. I guess im gona have to get used to it
-
No one would even remember Vista in a few months...
-
I loathe the Control Panel layout and haven't yet discovered if or how I can get "Classic View"... but I ain't very techie.
I haven't even figured out yet how to get a Device Manager shortcut on my desktop
I could easily get support from the super NBR member I bought my G1Sn from, but am ashamed I've neglected contacting him for so long
However, the notebook is running smoothly, a miracle really, since I went at the W7 installation like a bull (cow, rather) in a china shop

My 2 cents - if you're happy, leave well enough alone. You can always upgrade later to Win 7 if you wish. But not enough pluses to justify it if you are fine with what you have. Your experience mirrors mine, Vista is OK once tamed.
I look forward to Win 7 one day, but I'm in no big hurry. -
Turns out Vista isn't so bad.... Is Win7 worth it?
