    Hi,

    I'm seriously thinking of buying a A8JA or A8JM.

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect a monitor to the VGA port and another to the DVI port and have an extended desktop across those two monitors with either of these laptops?

I do not need to use the laptop LCD when doing this.

    Hope someone can help......

Interesting idea, I think it depends on whether the Go7600 supports dual monitor setup.

This seems to say it can:

But not sure if it can be done with DVI and VGA ... any reseller care to comment on this ?

I think you can, but would need a special cord / adapter or something. Anyone with experience out there?

The notebook can only drive two monitors by itself. One internal and one external. Two (or even three) external monitors is possible though, with additional hardware: You need this.

Is that true for both the A8JA and A8JM?

I ask this because they have different video cards.

I know some notebooks with a VGA and DVI output can handle two external monitors (one of the external monitors will display the same image as the internal laptop lcd).

The Matrox box should work well with any recent nVidia graphics card. As the notebook sees the two display as a single big one, obviously the more powerful card is better for 3D. For desktop use it doesn't matter much. Check out the Matrox link to see if their solution might suit you. There are some limitations and takes some getting used to, but the increased workspace can be very useful.
What notebooks? I have only seen that with a docking station.

Edit: ****. Didn't realize that those A6's had *both* VGA and DVI. Thought it gave up the VGA port. Sorry about that. Perhaps an e-mail or an PM to the resellers posting here might get them to try it out, as that's usually not something to be found in reviews. Please come back and share if you get confirmation one way or the other.

I have an A8JM and am trying to figure this one out myself.
When I have it plugged into one vga and one dvi monitor it will display stuff on the laptop screen and either one or the other monitor (I can choose which in the video card settings).

It just occured to me to put it in presentation mode or close the lid while doing this so next time I'm using it I'll try this too.

If anyone hears of a way to have it running all three monitors at once (without the afforementioned extra dongles and dodads, I don't need it that bad) please let me know since that would be highly optimal.

When using an A8JM you can easily run dual monitors.

Right click the Desktop and go into the NView Nvidia control pannel

choose the mode you wish to use in this case "Dual View" and Nvidia should also have detected in advance both monitors you have plugged into the back.

    Voila Hey presto!!

If one of you will buy me another gateway 21" LCD to supplement my current one I'll be glad to check this out!

I actually asked a similar question a while back but I was greedy and looking for triple-monitor (or even 5 with 2 matrox things), but apparently that was too crazy. If you could drive 2 external monitors without the matrox though you could technically drive 4 with 2 of them, which would be amusing to say the least.
