After years on desktop PC's and also iMacs (sorry); recently bought an Asus A55A-EB71 mostly for travelling.

I know I need to make the recovery disks as the first priority; but wondering-

-When using a laptop is it better to leave the battery in- when using the AC power; or remove it?

-I bought more memory- should I add it before I turn on the laptop- hasn't been run yet- or wait till make the recovery disks and then add the memory?

Extra question- which anti-virus suite would you recommend? I've used them all, but not on a laptop.

    Thanks for any help.

I think I found the answer to the battery question; but not the memory one.

    Anyone?

    Oh well,

It doesn't matter, memory are plug an play. Recovery disk files are already on the harddrive, all it does is burn them on to discs.

AV: Avast! or Microsoft Security Essentials.

For the RAM, what baiii said.

Thank you both, I really appreciate it.

Living on disability, or would have liked to get a more powerful laptop; but hoping this one will do the job- Ohio to Northern CA and back again 4 or 5 times a year.
    Thanks again,

Congrats on the new laptop. :D

    - Using AC power with the battery installed is fine, just avoid leaving the battery in for long period of time after it has fully charged - whether you are using the laptop or not.

    - As baiii mentioned, memory is plug and play, which means that it won't damage or corrupt your operating system in the event that it is bad. IF you happen to damage anything when installing memory, it would be on a hardware level; recovery discs won't save you there.

    - I personally don't use an Anti-Virus anymore, but the consensus on the most effective AV programs are (in no particular order):
    Avast!*
    AVG*
    ESET Nod 32
    Microsoft Security Essentials
    Malwarebytes*

    * = Free and subscription versions available.
