    Howdy all,

I'm a relatively new owner of a M50Vm-B1. All of the ASUS drivers & utilities are like a foreign language to me, and have pretty poor explanations as to what each one does. Thank goodness for this here board... Anyhow, I'm trying to figure out what the heck Dmedia.exe is or does. I've read some people referring to a tray icon, which I do not have. All I see is a registry startup item referencing dmedia.exe & a background process running that uses quite a bit of system resources. Sure, I can disable it without anything happening, but I like to know what I'm disabling, and what I might miss out on if I do so.

Second... I've installed all relevant drivers for my system, but I still have an "Unknown device" listed under "Other devices" in the Device Manager. My first thoughts were bluetooth or something to do with the fingerprint reader, but both of those drivers have been installed completely. I have no clue what this might be, so any suggestions are appreciated.

I don't know what DMedia is, but it might be identified if you insert the driver CD, let it autorun or start it up manually depending on how your machine is configured, and check the list of utilities.

Another thing is to look exactly where the Dmedia.exe is located. Probably the program folder name and location will tell you a lot about it.

poking through the exe shows it's some power management related exe, it contains strings in a menu like

    ...
    POPUP "Lid Close Action"
    BEGIN
    MENUITEM "None", 32840
    MENUITEM "Standby", 32841
    MENUITEM "Hibernate", 32842
    MENUITEM "Shutdown", 32843
    END
    END
    POPUP "DC Setting"
    BEGIN
    POPUP "Power Button Action"
    BEGIN
    MENUITEM "None", 32810
    MENUITEM "Standby", 32811
    MENUITEM "Hibernate", 32812
    MENUITEM "Shutdown", 32813
    ...
edit: it's seemsto also be responable for launching windows media center with he hotkeys

ClearSkies, I did see your post in my search. No offense, but I wanted to see if anyone had more detail. I am not sure what a media software program is; my guess would be something akin to Win Media Player, but with what crt says in the above post, Dmedia appears to be some kind of power management feature as well.

I did look on the driver CD, but there was no description available. Similar to when Dmedia.exe is run at startup, if I disable it from starting at boot, and then manually start the executable, nothing seems to happen (no tray icon, etc.) other than a background process starts running. *shrug*

I figured out the Dmedia thing I think.

From what I can see, Dmedia controls the media buttons (on my M50Vm, they are accessed by Fn + up/down/left/right and control media playback in apps like Win Media Player). Here's the thing, though. I have Dmedia.exe diabled from starting at boot. Right after bootup, if I go into Media Player, those hot keys work without Dmedia.exe running. Then, if I manually start Dmedia.exe and manually end Dmedia.exe, the hot keys no longer work. Bizarre.

Do some ASUS notebooks have dedicated media control buttons like a lot of HP notebooks do (i.e. above the keyboard near the speakers, some are touch-sensitive)? If so, I imagine that Dmedia.exe would control those. Perhaps in models without such controls, Dmedia is not really necessary. It's a wild guess, but I now feel better about not having it run at startup. If anyone has any more info to add, feel free. And if anyone has any info on my original post about the unknown device in device mgr, plz let me know.

the m50's have a dual porpouse touchpad which also has play, stop, skip buttons but they also work in other applications (like Songbird) oposed to the Fn+arrow keys which only work in media player
and they work without the dmedia as well.

    CRT,
if your second question still bother you, you can do this:
Delete this questionable device from hardware list.
Reboot your computer and watch what your OS is going to do with newly founded device. You should get an idea of what kind of device it is
