I have heard mixed response to these two series. In general, any thoughts on whether they are considered pretty decent, or any particular model  to stay away from?

I have the Ul50Vt laptop, which i can only give credit. Have been using it for a couple of months now and havn't experinced any problems yet. The built quality, performance, and especially the design are great and it's also thin and light - you couldn't ask for more. Obviously, It isn't a gamer laptop, but the performance in games is still pretty good. Have been playing bad company 2, bioshock 2 and Anno 1404 in medium graphics without problems.
I dont understand why people would want to avoid them?

Thanks for the response. Not sure about why people don't like them. I read one review a while ago that really shocked me. Could be the person was thinking of another brand that just starts with the same letter.

I have been shopping for a thin&light in the 13-14" range and actually always saw the Asus U and UL series as the high end of the line in terms of quality and capabiliities. Ultimately settled on the U35JC and love it... exactly what I wanted. There are others out there that are cheaper or have more bells & whistles, but this is the perfect mix of ultra-light (for the size) and solid construction with good power and battery life... high end of the price scale but you get what you pay for :)
