hey guys, so today i got a battery warning that when plugged in my battery is not charging and that i should consider replacing it...anyone else come accross this error? i cant get it to go away, bought the computer 8 months ago or less so im sure the battery shouldnt be dead already
-
where did you get this warning from? a 3rd party battery monitor program? On your bottom right icon, is it showing battery not plugged in?
you can try taking out the battery then putting it back in. -

DVD drive removal
Has anyone removed the optical drive on the U30Jc to save weight? Is there a faceplate or similar to put on there? I've seen the HDD caddies and considered putting an empty one in there (since I don't need an extra HDD yet), but worried the weight might be a wash. Does anyone want to weigh a HDD caddy for me?
A store says shipping weight 0.4 kg for the caddy, or ~1 lb. Which is the difference between the U30 and U35, the latter with no optical drive.. So I'm thinking not worth it..? -
-
Try this.
* Change you battery mode to "Battery Saving" mode.
* Right-click the battery icon in the task bar right side
* Select Power4Gear (or get to Power4Gear some other way)
* The bottom right reads "Battery Saving Desktop"
* Be sure that reads "No"
When I do that, (if my taskbar settings "auto-hide" is NOT checked) my taskbar does not hide when in Battery Saving mode.
You should not deep discharge a lithium-ion battery. This will damage it further. Li-ion batteries are not like Nickle Metal Hydride batteries. Those responded to resetting internally by deep discharging & recharging. -

I've been having a strange (perhaps hardware related) problem. Im running with u30jc-b1 and have been unable to play a game longer than 1 hour because it "overheats" and shuts down. Though it actually isnt that hot and the vent is open, it does it regardless.
I have also noticed that the fan turns on SUPER loud even when it isnt necessary. Could this be a hardware defect?
Ps. I have tried factory restoring, but alas... -
Hey dogs, I might sell my Asus U30JC (mainly cause i got a MBP, the new core i5). Im not sure yet, id rather not sell it but i got bills to pay and having 2 laptops isnt something i really need.
BUt if I do, what would you say i could get for it?
8-9 months old, mint condition with spare AC power charger and high quality geniune real leather skin for the lid. Also has 80GB SSD in it. Though i might take this out and put it in my MBP cause to me i think itll be much easier to sell a laptop without SSD in it. Cause its just too pricey for 90% of the public. -
Another possibility is under voltage?
-
The only thing I did was update it. (217)
Latest overheat shutdown : 10 minute 720p youtube video.... wow.
Could it be a defect or should I open up my computer and clean it? -

Overheats, shuts down and fan super noisy?
Take it apart and blow out all the dust.
I would even clean the fan blades with a Q-Tip if you really disassembe it fully.
Good luck. -

No BIOS setting can be made to clean dust off (if, that is in fact the issue).
If you're careful, you shouldn't void the warranty - at the very least, buy a can of compressed air (don't shake it!) and holding the can upright (turn/tilt the notebook) blow out any dust in the vents that you can reach without using a screw driver.
Good luck. -

hey guys, so basically in the past 2 weeks my battery has deteriorated to the point where my laptop wont turn on unless plugged in (will say batterys at 60% but not charging) so i sent in the battery since its still under warranty, but asus wont send out my replacement till they recieve the defective..so i was running it on the powerchord for the past few days, and tonight i turn it on and its stuck on the first screen (the ASUS logo screen)...and will not go past that..pretty fed up with this laptop right now. any thoughts?

Hey, just a little update:
I updated to the 2.17 BIOS and found a few things that may be interesting.
In normal daily usage, I have not noticed anything different with my system after I updated: it spun up the fans to their max (have never heard them that loud before!), updated the BIOS and after a few minutes cooling off time (less than 10 mins) the system was simply running 'normal' for me.
However, a couple of days later at one of my clients, that keeps his office like an oven (29/30 Celsius), I turned on the notebook and in less than 5 minutes, the fans were howling. The system did not shut down or anything (no throttling either, btw) but it was worrisome after having read antonyfl's posts.
Leaving the notebook on, I moved to an outer office (down one level) that had much more tolerable temps and in a couple of minutes, the fan noise dropped to normal (inaudible) levels.
Note: I was in the very hot office for over 45 minutes with the system on and no shutdowns (or throttling noticeable).
So, could the new BIOS contain new fan ramp maps?
While the noise is more than annoying - I would prefer this if it keeps the system at a proper temp (which makes me wonder; maybe the older BIOS fan/ramps didn't do).
Anybody else update to the latest 2.17 BIOS with similar issues/experiences?
Also: I blew out the fans/vents and there was very little/no dust inside (I do this continuously anyways). -
Hi all,
guys, I wanted to reinstall my Windows, but I nuked my recovery partition accidentaly. Would anyone be so kind an make a norton ghost (or any other partition backup) image of the recovery partition and put it on some ftp or some site? I can provide an FTP site. I really want to use the original Windows that comes on the recovery partition.
Many thanks,
Matyas -
Hey, guys!
I messed up with some of my U30Jc laptop keys, and I already ordered a replacement keyboard on eBay.
I'm trying to remove the keyboard, but I can't figure out how that thing works. Do I need to open and disassemble the entire laptop? I can see those four little holes at the top of the keyboard frame, but I already tried putting a screwdriver inside and applying some force, but I was afraid of breaking it.
Can someone please describe me how can I get the keyboard off?
Thank you! -

Anyone here has the i7 620m version with a 5600mha 8cells battery ?
How long does the battery last ? -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
It will last 5600/8400 less than the bigger capacity battery. Or 2/3rds less.
So if I can get a solid 6 hrs from my i3 350 + 8GB RAM with the 8400, then with the 5600 I should not expect to get more than 4 hrs with identical usage.
Why do you want such a small capacity battery?
If I could have bought the U30Jc with a 16,400mha battery, I would have. -
Well it would be $600cdn. But ive had the ad up for 3 weeks now and no serious buyers. Odd. To be honest, i dont think many care for SSD (most casual computer users probably dont even know what the hell it is). And most havent even heard of asus. So thats why im having a tough time trying to sell it. For $500 i might as well just keep it. I mean, I do love the laptop, its been great and im still impressed by the size and build quality on it after 7 months of usage now. Its perfect when i take it on my daily commute and i love the leather skin i have on the outside lid. -
Hello
My computer crashed earlier today, and after re-booting it's not working as it should. The main issue is the Optimus graphics are not working. It can't detect the graphics. I tried to re-install drivers but got the error:
"The Graphics driver could not find any applicable graphics hardware"
So it seems like the actual hardware cannot be accessed. How do i check in the bios to see if it's disabled?
Any help is MUCH appreciated! -

you can sell ssd easily on ebay.
or try "overclock.net"
a very popular forum that's very good. But you need 35 rep in order to sell... that can be hard -

Guys,
I have a very basic question re the number of asus U30Jc models available with different version like U30 JC A1, A2B, B1 etc.
I am lil confused looking at all these different versions, could any of you let me know why is there a difference and I see amazon alone have more number of different version than other resellers...
Any one have any idea and suggest me one good version among the various ASUS U30JC models.
Thanks in advance -
I bought a laptop so haven't look at them in a while, but I remember there are differences in hard drive size (250GB, 320 GB) and RAM. As usual with Asus laptops you might have to put it all into a spreadsheet to make sense of it

U30JC-B1 laptop ?? -
i was hoping for some input on the heat issues here: If anyone has downloaded a laptop sensor/heat sensor program such as SpeedFan, could they tell me how hot their CPU's and GPU usually gets under normal usage (high performance) and whilst gaming?
note: I use AIDA its easier -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
antonyfl,
maybe you could post your numbers to start the conversation?
I don't game, but when pushed hard I always have my system on a Zalman NC2000 notebook cooler which helps.
I would be worried if it was over 70/80 degrees (cpu) and possibly 80/90 (gpu) from all the information I have read on this topic.
My U30Jc rarely goes over 63/64 celsius (cpu) - don't really push the gpu so I can't tell you that metric. -
any update on this would be great!!

parthab,
don't take my word as the final say: but everything I've read suggests that the 'original' A1 version (which almost everyone reviewed) had the least amount of compromises.
Take that for what its worth (a year after I read (where?) those type of comments when I was doing my own research for my U30Jc).
Right now? I wouldn't buy any (old) version at any price (for myself) - I'm looking forward to the 2nd gen iCores and this form factor - better battery life, better performance (if/when needed), Optimus tech and most likely cheaper than what I paid last year. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they'll actually ship/offer a high resolution screen and then this little system will be 'perfect'.
Good luck. -
I have another problem with my laptop..
When i go full screen mode, my screen is black, i can hear sounds and see my mouse cursor, but the video will not enlarge.. I tried different sites like youtube, hulu, videos my teacher uploaded on school site.. none of the enlarge works.. I have updated my intel hd and nvidia through device manager.
Any suggestions? -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Yeah, wait until the video has started playing a bit - then go full screen.
Also, if it switches to a higher quality stream (eg. 240p to 480p) then you need to do this 'shuffle' again (at the higher streaming quality still selected). -
-
Any other suggestions for my defect?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Like I mentioned: when I wait for the video to start playing, then go full screen I can watch it.
If the video changes to a higher quality stream when I hit 'full screen', then I have to minimize it again and wait until it is playing for a few seconds before going full screen (and then it is viewable).
Other than that - what drivers are you running? -
nope it doesnt work. I just started a youtube video, let it go in 1 minute mark, then went full screen. Same thing. Black screen with my mouse cursor and sound coming out.
intel HD: 8.15.10.2302
nvidia 310m: 8.17.12.5896 -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Okay, you still didn't:
The key here is you minimize it once more...
I am also running the latest Adobe Flash Player and the latest Intel HD and nVidia 310M drivers. Which you are not running.
Try updating those (if you want) and/or try running the video for a few seconds full screen (15 secs...), minimize it, wait again for a few seconds (15 secs...) then go to full screen again.

my average temperature (regularly on high performance) is about high 70 - 80 range...

i am using AIDA and speedfan to confirm

Hi guys,
It's a long time I've been here on this forum. I'd came back with a good reason: malfunctioning of my laptop. Approximately 2 months ago I'd received my laptop from the Asus' repairing center. From that point of time I was never able to play any game on my laptop. I think the problem is my NVIDIA card since I’m able to play Quake Live on the onboard video card unlike on my NVIDIA card. Does this problem occur to any of you and what can I possibly do to solve this problem?
Greetings,
Kroep -
so i have bought a canister of air to clean my laptop. I took off all the screws (unfortunately, including the warranty sticker) and then was attempting to pry off the top shell of the laptop. I pryed almost all of it off, except one little area on the right side.
could anyone who has taken apart the laptop before, give some insight on this area? i made sure all the screws were removed and there seems to be a bit of plastic stuck there that i am afraid to break (now that I have no warranty)
the piece of plastic is located towards you, on the side of the optical drive
