THe u36 weighs in at under 4 lbs and does not have an optical drive. the u30 has an optical drive and weights close to 5 lbs.

The u36 has the i5 and the u31 has an i3 according to the gentechpc.com website.

Nevermind I thought you were talking about the u31 instead of the u30.

Edit: just realized their both SD's, fixed post.

The premium you pay for the U36 is also for the really sollid magnesium-alloy case, I'm still waiting on the U36 but most of the reviews I've read say there's zero flex.

As for the potential "extra weight" there's also an 8 cell battery in there,
    > also its 1.6 kg = 3.5 lbs.

Asus's website says the U30sd (the heavier of the two) has a 6 cell battery, and the U36 has the 8 cell, yet the u36 is to be 3.75lbs.
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS U30SD

Specs between the two seem to be identical other than the U36 has the magnesium build, larger hard drive, usb3 and larger battery. Here's the U36.

I remember U36JC reviews said the bottom of the computer gets hot to the touch. I wonder if that's cause of the super thin construction or is the chassis magnesium too?

Still I see no reason for the U30SD to be so heavy!

Why would you return a full fledge gaming laptop for a Ultraportable?

Did you not do your research before buying the heavy gaming laptop in the first place and just did it on impulse buy?
