I am considering purchasing a new machine for a friend and I feel like the U46SV would be a good match. Thing is they do not really want/need an optical drive and would rather have an SSD as primary and a HDD as data. I was wondering if anyone one knew of a converter tray for the optical drive that allows hdd. It appears that xoticpc has it as a customization option for their pre-order of the laptop, so I believe it exists. It is preferred that it would match the laptop too. And a side note about xoticpc. Never ordered from there, but if it was does their optical drive converters usually match the laptop?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dan

For what you want to do all you need is an HDD for optical bay caddy. They are pretty generic and will work with any models as long as its not a super slim drive. The U46SV should have not problem. I say should as these models havent strated shipping yet so we dont know 100% but with the specs we have it shouldnt be a problem.

It will always match the notebook. What we do is take off the original bezel and put in on the caddy, doing that will give you the original look.

Thanks for the response. Reassuring too when it comes straight from an employee.

One other thing. Does the ODD to HDD swap void the warranty and 1-year accident protection from Asus? And do you still get to keep the ODD?

    Hi.
Assuming you got the U46SV for your friend, I was just wondering if you found a caddy that worked. I just upgraded to an SSD on my U46SV but realized that the optical tray had little wings with screw holes. A generic caddy I bought doesn't have those pieces so I'm not able to screw in the caddy. If you found one that works with the U46SV, I would greatly appreciate if you could share.

    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin
