What befoozles me is this is seemingly marketed as having a touch panel, but the specifications and overview don't affirm that.
Unless someone here knows for certain, my advise is to contact Asus sales or technical support and inquire. -
There are supposed to be two versions of this model: one with a touch screen and one without. It's the same main model number (U500VZ), but one is called Zenbook Touch and the other isn't. So the question is, when is the touch going to be released?

Can't find any news leaks on the touch version (I still think it's a little odd that their web page dedicated to that model doesn't flaunt the touch screen feature).
But seeing as how the U500vz is already available, I'm guessing the touch version will be released soon. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! But I'll keep my eyes open. -
Can you provide link(s) to where the U500vz [non-touch] can be purchased?

According to notebookcheck.com (review: Review Asus Zenbook UX51VZ (U500VZ) Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews, it's the UX51VZ.

It's not very clear that this is the touch screen version on Newegg.... (If at all?) -

That's because it's not the touchscreen model.
The touch version is not yet available (we're all anxiously awaiting the release date, or at least a news leak).
-
I don't know about the US, but in Norway the U500VZ Touch is released the sixth of february.
All of the online stores say that they get it in stock on that date. -
Where did you hear that??
-
Well, I kinda said it in my post. I went to a website that sells computers, in my case komplett.no, and chose the product u500vz touch. It says that the u500vz touch is not in stock, but becomes available for sale 6. February.
-
Is it possible they simply made a labelling mistake while awaiting the non touch version to be stocked...?
-
No. First of all, the non touch version is already stocked. Second of all, I have checked several websites that have the same date - February sixth.
-
As far as I can see, the website you mentioned does NOT stock any version:
Komplett.no
What other websites do you see this on? -
OK, so, contrary to what was expected by many online websites (and a few posts here) CES 2013 has ended, with no announcment from Asus regarding a UX51Vz release. What now?
-
The DAY that it is possible to hand someone money in exchange for this laptop, it shall be done.
I can't believe that there is no press or expectations set whatsoever on the release date of the u500vz touchscreen model.
Has anyone tried contacting ASUS sales to ask? -

If there are no news leaks and no official announcements, they will almost certainly not provide information over the phone or via email. It's probable that tech support doesn't even know, let alone will they tell if they did know. -
From what I understand, there IS a touch screen version already available and being sold in SOUTH AFRICA. It's sold under UX51VZ-CM039P. You can google it to see what I mean. Also, seems like its been on sale since November.
I really don't understand what Asus is doing here. They seem pretty incompetent (there is a touch screen version in South Africa when everyone has been asking for one in the US, and there is not even a non-touch screen version in France) and it really makes you want to wait for the new samsung devices or a similar formfactor+spec from another company. -
Are there any Samsung devices [or something from another company] that are similar form factor+spec to this device with a touch screen? I haven't seen any PC ivy bridge laptops with a dedicated graphics card under 5 lbs other than this device (I'm not considering Macbook Pro Retinas).
-
Contrary to what Asus did, Samsung did announce a new laptop, with similar (a little bit better) stats than the Asus u500vz touch.
The new Samsung 7 Series Chronos will have the following specs:
2.3 kg weight
Core i7 2,4 GHz (which is better than Asus)
AMD Radeon HD 8870M 2GB
Full HD resolution
11,5 hours battery life (better than Asus)
It can be bought with either a huge HDD or a smaller SSD, the latter should be preferable to most. -
Unfortunately, the 2.3kg weight (5.05 lbs) puts this out of my range.
I really need something under 4 lbs (or right around 4 at the absolute most), and the only devices I've seen with a dedicated graphics card that hit this are the Sony S series, the Macbook Pro Retina, and this new ASUS u500vz touch. Since I need to run Windows 8 with a touch screen, guess I'll just have to keep waiting for ASUS to announce this, as it's the only laptop I've been able to find that nails all of my requirements.

when is the release date in the USA?

There is no release date anywhere in the world for this laptop yet.
ASUS has "silently posted the information" on their website, but at the time of this posting, any speculation on a release date in the USA or anywhere else, is exactly that - just speculation.
Once something official is announced, someone will probably post it here with a link to the source. -
Wow, a 100g more puts Samsung out of your range? Asus weights 2.2kg.
-
Actually, the Asus is only 2.06kg (or 2.16, with traditional HDD) according to the product website.
-
ACTUALLY, I had to register on this forum just to respond to you because I hate when pompous d.ouche-bags like yourself chime in with a post starting with "Actually" in an effort to disprove what someone else posted when in fact you are ACTUALLY, very wrong.
The non-touch model is 2.06kg, the touch model is 2.2kg.
Its cool though, continue being illiterate. -
Actually,
Take a little clicky-clicky on the link on the "actual" ASUS website which I've "actually" posted for you here: ASUS - - ASUS ASUS ZENBOOK Touch U500VZ
And you'll see that "actually" the weight is quoted as: 2.06 kg and 2.16 kg both for the "actual" touch model. One with HDD, one without.
Oopsie.
Learn to troll. Actually. -
Don't be so sure, even Asus doesn't know what the weight is and you must be "xxx" to think that touch model weights the same as non touch. Where will the touch feature card go then, yes under the screen and that's why is thicker. Think about hardware if you can.
Touch = 2.2
Non touch = 2.06

Well, it exists. At least, it does in South Africa...

Microsoft Store
Microsoft Store in the US already have it in stock. -
Yeah, I saw that after I posted the YouTube links. Too bad the MS store is only offering the 512GB model. I was looking more in the range of $2K or less for the 256GB version.
-
So -- it's strange, but the listing in the Microsoft store doesn't have any mention of a dedicated graphics card whatsoever.
EDIT> I just called the Microsoft store and confirmed that this model DOES indeed have the dedicated graphics card. They apologized and said they would update the listing ASAP to include this information.
I ordered mine this morning, they went out of stock almost immediately. Thanks for posting the link!

Man, I kind of got screwed by a Microsoft sales rep. He told me the laptop is eligible for the student discount. So I was looking to get 10% off with a coupon code, but it would not work at checkout. Rep said he would find out what the deal was and get back to me for placing an order via phone with the discount. He got back to me next day, but it was already sold out!
Anyways, for those interested, two Microsoft reps told me (via chat) that this model was eligible for the student/educator 10% discount. This is a significant discount, and will probably limit me to buying this from the Microsoft store (unless other retailers offer this, which is unlikely).
Nonetheless, does anyone know if this bad boy is being stocked elsewhere in the US? Kind of surprised Best Buy doesn't have it, they stocked the UX31A touch before everyone else. -
Someane had news about U500vz with a touch screen ?

Update on this laptop:
For some reason, the Microsoft online store decided to discontinue carrying this. It makes absolutely no sense, as it sold out on the very first day and it seems a ton of people are still actively trying to get their hands on one. The website shows out of stock, and from what I was told - their reps have only been told that they won't be carrying it any more. I was fortunate enough to get one by walking in to a local Microsoft store -- don't know if the physical store has discontinued it as well or not.
Other than a loose trackpad that makes some extra clicky noises when I tap it, I'm extremely happy with this laptop. It's everything I had hoped it would be.
Good luck to everyone trying to get one. -
What terribly unfortunate news. I've had money on hand since December to buy this laptop, and it still is unavailable. I guess I will just have to wait indefinitely at this point. I talked to an Asus rep about a month ago. He told me that these models were coming to the US soon, lol. We will see.
-
After months of seeing only "Out of stock" on the Microsoft Store site, tonight I saw it said "Add to cart." I just ordered mine! Student discount available.
Get one NOW while you can! -
My constant stock checks on that page finally paid off. I had a good feeling it was going to be in stock soon. I've been monitoring some Australian forums. The vendors in Australia had more details about shipments and let customers know. They were expected to get some this week after months of delay. And sure enough, the US did as well. It appears it could be a supply chain issue more than anything. I placed my order at 2 AM this morning (May 23) at Microsoft Store. They were sold out within a half-hour after I bought.
Anyways, for those who want to keep monitoring Australian availability of this laptop (which seems to mirror the US), here's the link:

It's back in stock at MS.
