damn i reckon U6 is better than U3... hmmmm wtf asus
-
omggggg so sexy.... I'm definitely getting a u6 or u series laptop in 4 years after my v2s-a1 gets outdated.
-
Finally it looks like Asus is back on track with nice laptops. U1, U3 U6, they all look quite nice and solid. Kind of reminds me the time when we had the W1, W2, W3 ...
-
Yeah. Too bad battery life is down the drain, and every new model has at least 3 different BIOS bugs...
-
nice sexy laptop! any info on the specs yet??
-
S will have dedicated graphics, whereas the E will have integrated intel GMA X3100.
I'm not sure what the point of the 's' model is, since thats what the U3 is for. Plus, adding dedicated graphics will slaughter battery life and increase heat. The U6E makes sense as a 2.8-3.2lb ultra portable that slots between the U1 and U3 in size, weight, and price (which would put it at $1900 or so). -
I wish they made a sexy "u4" for a 14in laptop....12in is too small for me =(
-
-
I think I see an optical drive
-
-
-
Its not bad, but I just got a U3s(which doesn't have one). And if this puppy got led light and a optical drive and non integrated graphics. I will be like OW CRAPola.
Also I never heard anyone use "what a sexy baby" in the context of the TS.
I heard your so sexy baby(heck I said it to my GF).
But when I heard it in this context I almost expect a very disturbing picture to pop up(happily we are on a notebook forum).
If I hear Someone say what a sexy baby in public I am running and running fast. -
-
IN the pic without the woman, I think i see writing on the side which denotes optical formats on the side.
-
Whats the problem?
-
looks like it has a optical drive
heres the manual

That is great news. Perhaps this will replace my Z33.
-
Who ever purchases this first, I will have to ask them, "Do you feel the sexiness of the U6".
-
The Z33, W3, and V6 were all plenty sexy with their similar styling.
-
can somebody post the full spec of this thing??
-
Here you go.

oh goodness 3.3 pounds, 12.1 inch led lcd, 5 hour battery life on a six sell, optical drive and dedicated graphics. Holy Crap!! I think this just crapped on the u3s and the xps m1330. -
If that 5 hours is reported by ASUS, I wouldn't trust it very much. Here's how I imagine they compute it:
They turn the brightness all the way down (or even turn of the LCD). They turn off the wireless, BT, and anything else that can be turned off. They let the computer sit doing absolutely nothing until the battery is drained. They measure the time. And then they add from 20 to 40% to that time (depending on how bad it was), and post it on the specs page.
Edit: this is of course how it goes with ALL manufacturers. -
-
it's going to cost $2,833.00?? That's nuts
-
even if it "only" gets 4 hours on 6 cells it will still be great! and they will probably give you a 3 cell battery too. Thats the combo i got with my w5
-
I would guess more like 3 / 3+ hours under normal usage. That still means you get 4+ hours out of the 9-cell (if there is one), but it's still not really a battery life worthy of an ultraportable. But still good
-
-
it's leather on the palm rest.
the new Asus U6S was announced in a press conference in Italy
http://notebookitalia.it/asus-u6s-ultraportatile-hsdpa-e-grafica-3d-in-1-5kg.html
there were also Asus G2S Extreme LE, U1E, UMPC R2E, a smartphone, etc... -
I don't think the black/white/silver combination works well. I prefer the all black look like U3.
-
If they got a bloody nine cell in there that would mean 7+ hours of battery life for a computer not using a low voltage of ultra low voltage which is phenomenal. -
I didn't mean it as sarcasm
If those guys did test the battery themselves and got 5 hours, then it's 5 hours. But my point was: if they took it from the spec sheet, then it's overestimated, sometimes by as much as 30% or more, for marketing reasons (similar reasons for which the height of the notebook is measured without the feet, the weight with the smallest possible battery and travelers' drawer, when possible).
So it was just a word of caution. I don't want to destroy your hopes.
5 hours from the 6 cell is still possible, because it's an ultraportable, but I find it a little unlikely, because of the recent battery trend on ASUS notebooks (which was steep downwards).
Edit: I've scanned the articles and from the style in which they were written (news release) it really seems those 5 hours were taken from the spec sheet. I don't think they invested the time into testing the laptop themselves for battery life. So, keep your hopes high, but your expectations realistic. That way, you won't be disappointed. -
I really doubt you can squeeze 5 hours out of the U3 or U6 using a 6-cell battery and still "use" the notebook.
If I turn off the LCD, wireless, bt, and switch to integrated graphics on my U3, I can probably get the thing to hum for close to 5 hours while I watch the blue lights flicker.
Typical usage for me is clocking in at around 3 hours, with wireless/bt on and 40% brightness. A LED screen will save some power, but I doubt it can add 2 hours. -
Hmm, the U6 specs have been released, but its essentially the same as what the U3s was supposed to have: T7500, 2GB, 160GB, 8400G, and 12" LED screen. Also, it has a DVD-RW drive and starts at well under 4lbs.
-
if asus aren't going to release their new laptop's until december then I'll probably wait for the penryn to kick in!
does anyone know when the u6 are coming to the us?? -
-
I was going to buy a U3 until I heard of all the things "cut" from it, like LED... if this model comes out in the US for a respectable price (Europe's notebooks are always more expensive due to VAT, yes?) then this may very well be my next laptop. Lets keep on top of this one, guys... seems like it could be a great one! (typed from his W3v, which is feeling its age)
-
I think the black in the U3 doesn't work as well as the white, since the silver keyboard seems to go much better with the white than with the black, where it ends up contrasting with the rest of the body.
The white and black of the U6 kinda reminds me of the Sony FZ and the barebones Asus S37s (not Z - the S version has a black interior with a pearl white lid, whereas the Z has a glossy black lid and a silver interior). It doesn't look that bad, but its certainly not the most harmonious look. -
Sorry to dissapoint you guys... The battery that comes with the laptop (not the optional 6 cell) allows for 1 hours of battery life. I read a review of it in Computer sweden yesterday (friday).
-
So that means the six-cell will do two hours. I think I will stick with my Sony TZ.
-
What the point of putting in a Led LCD if the battery life is so crummy.
-
Uhh, I want to know why the power consumption is so high...I mean, its got the exact same friggin specs as soooo many other notebooks out there....even after multiplying by 2 (for a 6 cell battery), its still so low. And thats with an LED backlit screen....Pathetic Asus, pathetic.
-
Yep, 1+ hr off the 4 cell and barely 2hrs out of the 6cell is much more along the ASUS trend... Unfortunately.
But see the U3 thread, it seems that a magazine in the UK reviewed the European version and they got 5 hours out of the 6-cell? That's strange isn't it. -
Thats on the Intel GMA graphics, definitely. But that still seems overstated by like, an hour, at minimum.
I still find it amazing that the G1s, with an 8 cell, gets less than half the battery life as my similarly powerful Vostro 1500 does on a 9 cell. -
Well I hadn't seen this thread before and I was on the market for the U3. Now I'm confused because the U6 has all that the U3 was supposed to have: LED backlighting, 2Gb of RAM (and not a soldered 512 chip apparently), integrated ODD. With all this I am sure the U6 will be positionned between the U3 and the U1 (for which reason they should have called it U2... lol but we all know that wasn't possible, right
).
-- I expect battery life to be similar, to the U3. The reason is that the battery will probably be smaller and the smaller factor will have to account for LED screen (little less consumption) and ODD drive (little more consumption, when not in use).
-- price, as someone said before, is probably going to be between the U1 and U3, so that makes around $2000 with 2Gigs, internal ODD and T7500.
Now what I am more concerned about is heat. Apparently they crammed a T7500 in this 12.1-inch laptop, which is about the top-of-the-line of Intel's processor nowadays. That means higher TDP and heat. Besides that you have an internal ODD and HSDPA and bluetooth and wireless N that all contribute to heat (the U3 even has GPS on top of that).
The only laptop I know of that is of similar size and packs a non-low-voltage processor with all this features is the Lenovo X61. And all the reviews I read said that the Lenovo runs hot. I wanted to get it but since my laptop is my only computer I wanted something I could use under any circumstances that is on my lap and outside when it's feakin' 90 here in Texas. I didn't get the X61 for that reason. And believe me, the Lenovo engeneers are much better technicians than the Asus people. So if Lenovo did not manage solving the heat issue properly, I don't see how Asus could have done that. Especially since it is more fashion oriented than business oriented and even have leather palm rests. Now I hope that leather is heat resistant.
I think I'm going to stick with my first choice for that, especially since the U3 is much more likely to run cooler and has swichable graphics, which I think every laptop should have.
EDIT: when is it coming out anyway??? -
I've gone through several IBM/Lenovo notebooks T40/T42/T61p. None of them were cool enough to place on my lap and use for an extended amount of time for games. It's not so bad if you're surfing or writing emails, but still not comfortable.
The U3S is definitely cooler than any Thinkpad I've used. I tend to run my games at higher resolution, so wouldn't use it for gaming anyway. My experiences with Asus G2S and U3S tends to show that Asus has much better heatsink/fan design than IBM/Lenovo. The U3S draws cooler air from the bottom and vents the hot air out the left. Heatpipes are used to remove heat from the graphic chips. -
Excellent news! Glad you mentioned, Eugene.
-
Anyone know if/when the U6 will be available in North America?
-
I would guess next year, but I have no idea.
