Okay, when I first got my hands on this UL30VT yesterday I noticed the idle temp on the GT210M was around 86* C with Aero enabled ( YIKES! ) so I dismantled it, removed the cheap thermal crap and cleaned the heatsink and applies a fresh thin layer of AS5 and now it idles at around 70* C with Aero enabled and as low as 55/56* C with Aero disabled. Load temp on the GT210M in TF2 and BioShock 2 is around 96/97* C and I would like to see load as close to 80* C as possible.

My question is this. Is there anything I can do to drop my idle temps? Should I shim between the SU7300, GT210M and Intel chipset? Would shims help much with this unit? How about drilling a few small holes under the notebook where the fan is? I notice now the fan only pulls air thru the keyboard like it did on my old HP NC8430 and after I drilled 6x 3/16" holes my temps dropped 3 - 5* C and am wondering if I shouldn't just do the same here.

edit: Come to think of it, my 9600M GT used to idle at 70C as well... (that computer's now dead due to something unrelated)

Was there any thermal pad between the GT210M and the heatsink?

There was just the grey thermal crap most companies use. I removed that, used my AC cleaning kit and applied the AS5 which did help though not as much as I was hoping for.

Idle temps are far better now than they were averaging around 65/66* C but my load temp of 96/97* C just seems high to me.

Well, I managed to get my idle temp on the G210 down to 49/50* C by removing the memory cover and putting a 70mm fan powered by a 5v USB adater right up against the slot. This also reduced my load temp form 100/101* C to 96* C. Probably goung to order a 12v molex adapter and 92mm fan and make a custom cooler for this thing to get more airflow thru the memory slot as that seemed to help quite a bit.

my laptops was also sounding like jet when doing a few things. I used some canned air and now its silent again. This has been a great laptop now for two years.
