    Hey,

So I've searched around and couldn't find a definite answer on this. I just got my new UL30VT-A1 after years with my OLD Asus z63!

The first thing I noticed when I turned on the UL30 was the HDD noise. With my Z63, I can't hear the hard drive at all. I just wanted to know if it is normal to constantly hear the hard drive or is there something wrong with my notebook?

    Thanks!

The HDD in the UL30VT-A1 (seagate 500gb 5400rpm) is louder than average. However, it should be normal and I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you're seeing bad sectors and errors with SMART. Download a copy of HD Tune and check your HDD for errors just to be sure. If the noise is problem, you could try installing another HDD such as the Western Digital Blue. SSDs would also be a great upgrade/replacement since it's virtually silent, but the cost will be significantly higher.

I think it's safe to say you can cut the "virtually" part out. An SSD is dead silent.

That should go away after a several days of use. I believe the noise stems from Windows accessing the hdd and cache-ing files since its a new system.

I noticed the same with my UL30A. It's not the noise cause by HDD access, but the spinning. First I thought the fan was on until I noticed it was the spinning of the hard drive. I'm not sure if it was like that from the beginning or if it just appeared.

It's not loud, but it's properly noticable. Is that normal?

    Cheers!

Mine is pretty silent. If you really listen you can hear the HD.

I'd say its pretty typical noise wise for 2.5" HDs.

Overall I'm very happy and don't see any reason to upgrade to a SDD.
