Has anybody used an external monitor off of the VGA port on the ul30a? I've only been able to get 1280x800 max on a 1920x1200 monitor. HDMI is fine, but VGA has its resolution capped for no apparent reason. Also, Windows 7 keeps detecting my monitors over VGA as "Generic non-PnP monitor," and no amount of monitor restarts or computer restarts or uninstallation of the driver or forcing installation of different drivers can fix the issue.
I've had other laptops display just fine on VGA. I've tried two different monitors with the ul30a over VGA and run into the same problem. I've even done another Windows install just to see if there's a different, and I still have a 1280 cap on the VGA output. I'm beginning to think this is an idiotic hardware limitation, and I am hoping someone can prove me wrong or corroborate with me on this one. Thanks.

So I just tested it... my VGA gives me an option for 1920x1080 but when I set it, my monitor pops up with a message saying the timing isn't supported... not sure what that means.
Everything is fine through the HDMI though like you mentioned. -
older TVs tend to have a much, much lower VGA res than native. you'd have to check with the manufacturer/manual to see what the max supported is.
-
See if you can select a different refresh rate on your laptop options.
-
But were you able to still display in the higher res regardless of the message?
I am trying to connect to an LCD monitor via VGA. The max resolution on the monitor is 1920x1200.
I can, but it doesn't give me more resolution options or anything. -
My UL30A works fine with 1920 x 1200 (HP LP2465 display) with the analog VGA port (works also with the HDMI). When the internal and then external displays are enabled then you will not get that high resolution at the external display. To get the high resolution with the external port first disable the internal and save the setting and then switch the external to the desired resolution.

I did indeed disable the laptop screen when trying the external. I have a feeling the issue is tied into the fact that the laptop refuses to recognize the external monitor as a plug and play one. Everytime I try to set it up with Windows, the Device Manager shows "Generic Non-PnP Monitor." If anyone knows how to fix that, save of declaring this a hardware issue with the laptop, I will be forever grateful!

Did it detect your monitor automatically and allow a 1920x1200 resolution or did you have to tweak the Intel drivers to add a custom resolution? If you were able to just plug in the HP via VGA and have it work 100% fine, then I think something is wrong with my UL30a and I am going to have to get it replaced.

VGA can display much higher resolution than HDMI thus it might be your TV not supporting such high resolution or there's a problem with the laptop.
-
Yea, I'm leaning with the latter. Trust me, my monitor displays 1920x1200 resolution via VGA. I've done it on a different laptop.
-
Yes it did detect automatically. No tweaking.

I know what the problem is now - it's their damn BIOS upgrade. I received a replacement today with version 206, and the monitor displayed perfectly. Then, I upgraded it to 212 and everything went to crap again. I tested the prior laptop with the monitor after I had already upgraded the BIOS. Can you tell me what version your BIOS is so I can see if I am right? If so, I gotta figure out how to downgrade this .
-
Here it is BIOS 2.11. Good to know 2.12 does not work fine. I didn't find the time to upgrade. So I will let it with the 2.11.

mine has exactly the same problem. did you rewind the bios to 211 and did that work? i have no idea how to do that so any guidanve appreciated. thanks
