Hey All,
does anyone know if optical drive can be removed? And is there a caddy that would fit into UL80VT's optical drive bay? The goal is to put an SSD drive in there. Voided warranty is not a concern.
thanks

The optical drive can be removed, but there is no caddy for a secondary hard drive.

I was curious about this as well. This thread might help you out a lot, since you won't have a caddy so you'll need to order one to put the SDD into before putting it in AFAIK

And then this thread can be helpful for what to do with your optical drive when you remove it.

Good luck and let us know how it goes if you go ahead with this! -

Good evening. I wanted to give a bit of input about the UL80VT's optical drive. This particular drive is much smaller than a normal optical drive bay. Therefore most of the HDD caddies I have seen will not fit as they are made for a standard sized optical bay. I would say that it is at least a quarter of an inch thinner than a standard drive.
Hope that helps

Thanks for everyone's responses. It sounds like UL80VT owners are stuck with the optical drive until someone builds a caddy that works for it.
Joseph, do you know if there is a blu-ray drive that can fit into UL80VT?
Thanks! -

any alternate solution, maybe just run ssd and odd and get external enclosure for hdd storage?Last edited by a moderator: Feb 2, 2015 -

This UL80VT post tells us the UL80VT uses a 9.5mm sata optical drive. So the newmodeus 9.5mm sata or ebay 9.5mm sata unit would do the job. The newmodeus slot-loading caddy you've linked being the same as the one I've linked minus the faceplate.
UL80VT optical drive
Only issue may be faceplate fit. Both caddies have a flat faceplate that is removable, but the UL80VT's faceplate contours. So I'd expect the final fit to be slightly inside the top edge of the UL80VT, since the UL80VT contours the faceplate. So might not be cosmetically pleasing.
If anyone goes ahead with this, please post pics or links to pics in the DIY: Adding SSD or HDD storage using an optical bay caddy thread.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 2, 2015 -
Just make sure to get the black caddy in order not to create a color contrast with the notebook. Also if you get the newmodeus caddy be sure to have a REALLY small "+" head screwdriver around (size 000 or 00 I think)[1], as it has some really small screws that need to be removed. I had quite some problems removing them...
BTW, I used nando4's thread to get my caddy and it has been a great help!
[1] sorry for the non-technical explanation of the screwdriver head, I have no idea how a "+" screwdriver is called in English.
