I was planning on replacing the Seagate Momentus 5400.6 drive that came in my notebook with a Western Digital Black 7200 rpm model of some flavor.

I have a severe dislike of Seagate drives, but ultimately I want a performance boost, so is this a wise upgrade?

Also a quick question about the AI Recovery program- I ran the program after I received the computer, it burned 4 DVDs. Am I correct in assuming that this made an image of the hard drive as it was that day? So can I use the same system to make a full backup of the hard drive anytime I want?

    Thanks.

no, that is not a worthwhile upgrade..

if you want a worthwhile upgrade, please do yourself a favor and do like myself :

purchase a 40-80gb ssd with the intel g2 chipset. then buy a 10$ external enclosure and use your seagate as a storage drive.

In October I had a Momentus 5400.4 fail with no warning. The pcb fried, and I was unable to recover anything off the drive.

This was the second Seagate I have had that failed. I have never had a WD fail.

Kenze- I was going to take a WD Black 250GB out of my old laptop (it replaced the Momentus that died). So I was going to recycle it into the new computer, but I like the way you think. I am researching my options now.

SO if I just bought a momentus 500 GB 7200RPM drive, should I sell it and get a WD?

I have my own prejudices, other people feel the opposite. Let's just say I personally am not comfortable with Seagate, but I am not a hard drive technician who has first hand statistical proof that one is better than the other.

So don't pay any attention to my opinion, but look around the internet and look for information and surveys that look at large samples.

(Mostly I don't want you to swap for a WD and have that go bad, then blaming me)
