I read the UL80vt review on this site and the build quality didn't seem good. (UL80vt : "...its weak build quality, abysmal keyboard, and unfriendly touchpad prevent us from signing its praises.") Is it the same thing for the UL50?

Since the UL30's quality seems good, it's hard to guess about the UL50...

(UL30-A : "The design is attractive and the construction of the body is great; with high quality materials used throughout. The keyboard is comfortable to type on, with excellent support to resist any flexing.")

    Thanks.

I have the UL50Vt. Build quality is a little less than my UL20A-A1. It is bigger size so the chassis will flex more. It flexes if you push on the right side where the CD/DVD drive is. If you give enough force, the hinges can twist slightly. Mine came with a loose keyboard but that was easily fixed in 2 minutes.

Thanks. Would you still recommend it?

FWIW, I just received my UL80VT today and don't seem to have nearly as many problems as Charles did when he reviewed his unit. I was somewhat turned off/disappointed after reading that review, but then I read quite a few more reviews on other sites and they were generally a lot more positive.

I haven't put the laptop through a torture test or anything, but so far I'm pleased with the keyboard, touchpad, and build quality. Even the screen is better than I was expecting after hearing how HORRIBLE some people said it was. I guess some of the comments I read set my expectations low, and I had them exceeded when I actually got the thing in my hands. My plan is to use it for the next several days, and if there are any crippling flaws then I'm going to purchase my second choice, the N81VP. But the main draw of this unit, at least for me, was the incredible battery life with the option for discrete graphics for occasional gaming.

absolutely, if you like bigger notebooks. It is 15.6" keep in mind. The slight flexing bothered me but you have to push hard. no one does that on purpose to their notebook, i hope! it is a very thin notebook so i suppose flex is expected.

I have the UL50VT and have had zero build issues. The laptop is a dream though a lot slower than my previous ASUS f8s laptop; though the battery life and weight are about 10x better.

I would highly recommend the UL50vt, but do a clean install as there seems to be something ASUS installs that liked to lock up my laptop.
