Do you have a W2vb or W2vc model? When and where did you get it?
-
W2vc
i got it through UBC (university of british columbia)
*edit: i just noticed on the box it says: softload: without OS (not sure it matters) -

Yeah, that matters a lot actually.....
You've got a notebook from the first batch of W2's that came into North America back in August. They came as a "vc" which is XP Pro and it had a digital tv tuner (which was changed out when the unit was changed to MCE).
Technically the only W2's in North America should be "vb" models.... with that, the automated recovery discs won't work..... you'll have to reload the OS from the MCE discs that the included and then the drivers seperately...... -
thanks for the reply justin,
im not sure i got the MCE discs. whats better the digital tuner or whatever they changed it too?
****! i hate computers now. -
just double checked and there is NO MCE discs!
how should i proceed -

Did you have MCE on the system when you got it?
No tuner is "better", but the analog is the only one that works with MCE and the digital one doesn't work with the type of digital tv we have in north america... so although it's more "advanced" ... if it does nothing, I'd say it's worse.....
I can tell you that when the systems showed up that way here, we had to have them sent back and after they came back, MCE discs were not included and we had to hold off selling them till Asus provided them. That's something I actually found as I was testing them and that only goes for our customers.... Asus very well may have shipped some to Canada and if no one complained, they may not have known the discs weren't in the unit....... but basically you have to call Asus for the discs. -
well it looks like asus is getting a phone call and a email tomorrow.
thanks justin, you have been a great help. -

yeah, everyone has that cable - but you don't have the both cables on the inside running to the tv tuner... trust me..... the digital doesn't work with MCE and if you were able to get a tv signal.. you have to have the analog... and that I'm willing to bet on....
but yeah, I know exactly how yours is set up and like I said, the first batch into the US was technically the wrong spec and Asus took them back and made them the right spec, but in your case forgot to include the MCE discs......... but your shipment may have been enroute to Canada by time I found the problem and reported it to them. -
it seems that you are correct again sir.
is there any channel or remediation that is preferred? i want to get both my issues resolved now; the TV TUNER and my MCE 2005 dics - and a big hug with them saying sorry we F'd up.
*edit: just to clairify, i do have the wrong TV tuner in this model ??? -
PROPortable Company Representative
Well, no you don't understand....... you said the tuner was working before, correct? If it was working in MCE then the tuner was changed out and is the correct tuner for the MCE model which is the ONLY one that officially shipped in North America... the sticker may still say "vc", but it's a "vb" model at heart.........
Asus didn't really screw up as much as the company you bought it from didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground -- and essentially they're responsible....... I mean if my company is responsible for a screw up like this, then other one who misses something like this should take the same blame.....
Asus will give you the MCE discs.... most likely.... give them a call. -
thanks again justin, youve been a great help!
