US A8JS somewhat-of-a-small-1minute-review

OK, go read the a8jm review and then come back here. It's the exact same notebook with the following differences:

I got it from gentech/1toppc.
HD is an Hitachi.
14.1"@1440x900 is fine. It is not too high for a smaller screen.
Ships with a moderate amount of crapware, but all of it was easily removed. Skype, norton AV, etc.
Battery estimate of 150-160mins is accurate.
Ships with Nvidia drivers 86.02

So the battery life is a bit shorter. I guess you don't have a A8Jm for comparison, but how's the heat (ie since it's drawing more power and between Merom and the higher GPU, do you think it's warmer than the A8Jm)?

It did not get noticibly hot during my 3dmarking. I will check out how hot it gets in gaming tomorrow.

 

The grapevine told me that 7700 generate less heat than the 7600.

 

hey alrox how long did it take to get your laptop from gentech?

 

with ups 3 day it shipped last friday and got here tuesday, 1 day ahead of schedule.

 

Are you gonna be posting any pictures? I really wanna know if it just looks the same as the A8Jm.

 

So you're saying that your A8Js has a T2400 Core Duo? Are you sure? Isn't it a bit strange for an A8Js?

alrox congrats on your new laptop. A few questions for you.

1. how much does it actually weight and how muhc does it feel like it weights? (just the laptop itself)
2. is the hardrive the new perpendicular kind or the old vertical one?
3. how does the laptop look in person? too big/small/thick for a 14''? does it look nice/very nice/awsome? better than say a dell inspiron e1505?

Please go to display properties advanced monitors and tell us the model number of the lcd.

hd tune tell us the make of the hd although i assume its a hitachi.

you can even pull out the ram if youd like tell us what that is.

Yeah, that's what confused me also. The only A8Jm review around here is Darrick's, and Darrick's A8Jm has a T2400 processor. So I asked if alrox's A8Js has a T2400 also-since alrox did not list a different processor for his/her A8Js, but all I got was a 'don't post in this thread'.

I think what he meant was that besides the Core 2 Duo processor, all those are the other differences... the A8Js is Merom only, no Yonah.

This one.

1. It seems very light to me. Noticibly lighter than the 6lb/15.4" combo's a lot of people have.
2. The HD model # is Hitachi HTS541010G9SA00. Speocs: More here
3. It looks very nice to me, just like an a8jm. Ive never seen an e1505 in person but from pictures the build quality appears to be better on the Asus.

 

My A8Js with T5600 MEROM, I am very satisfied from the machine but not realy from the Audio level, it quit low for me...how can i incress it?

 

Can you tell if the battery is a Sony?

Can one buy a bluetooth device that connects to USB 2.0? Would this be workable solution?

 

The N. American version of the A8JS does not have internal BT, its not a stupid question. Yes, you can use an USB BT module.

 

Since the A8Js has a different LCD than the A8Jm how do you like it? How is the color, contrast, and viewing angles. I just got back from a computer store here in Italy and they had a Sony SZ series laptop and I was completely unimpressed with it, especially the screen. To me it looked almost washed out.

 

I saw it listed a couple places and not listed in others. So I guess it might be a very good question

 

I kinda like the Sony SZ, way overpriced though.

 

Thanks for the reply alrox. I"m guessing it's the older hard drive that came with the laptop.

And that's the thing with pictures, every other A8J picture I look at is different, I wouldn't know what it really looks like unless I get one.

How big does the text look compared to a wsxga+ on a 15.4" screen? bigger or smaller?

 

So how much would a USB 2.0 bluetooth module cost? Is there a difference in performance betw. an internal bluetooth and a usb model?

This option (usb 2.0) would also keep the 2 yr. global warranty intact and maybe cheaper than installing an internal one which would void the warranty.

Alrox, I prefer that you provide a more comprehensive review as you are one of the "first" N. American owners of an Asus A8Js - a privilege, rather than some of your unpopular responses - you're losing credibility. I'm wondering now if I can really believe you.

To be ontopic a bit, Euro version of A8Js contains BT 2.0 EDR and also comes with 1x1GB RAM, oposite to 2x512 MB A8Jp (which is, BTW, 300$ cheaper here in Europe).
