    Hi:

I am totally out of ideas. My V6V was getting stuck on Boot a the "USB Controllers initializing" level. This has only happen in the last couple of weeks.

One time I was able to boot into BIOS (F2) and turn off the USB Controllers. Now my lappy is pretty much like new. No problems whatsoever. Now, after several days of bliss and as a test (to really make sure it was the USB controllers).. I decided to boot into Bios and enable the USB controllers - after that I couldn't boot up my machine again.

It took me forever to boot into Bios to disable it again, so I am not doing that.

What can I do???.. My machine is working flawlessly, except for the fact that I can't use any usb port ---> thus I can't use: flash keys, usb mouse, ipod, digital cameras.. etc.

Why is this happening??.. and What can I do to fix it???

    Model: V6V
    RAM: 1 GB
BIOS: 1201 (would love to get my hands on 801 BIos - Anybody???)

Only standard software installed: ASUS utilities, latest chipset drivers (from INTEL website - for 915pm chipset), Win XP Pro, and NHC (to control fans)

    Thanks for all your help.

you could try either of the following:

    Windows Restore
    Windows Repair using a CD
    Full Re-Install & Format

If you can't boot into BIOS, it is probably not a software issue..

Also, if you find that your USB ports have been rendered useless, you might be able to buy a PCMCIA card with USB ports to use instead.

That is my general guess. Actually, since I couldn't boot at all... I open it up and just moved things around.. push the hardrive against the connectors, shake this a little here and there. Then start it up, press F2 and hope for the best... thats when I was able to boot up again.

YOU are a GENIUS !!!... that sounds like it could be my solution now. Lappy is way out of warranty and still looks and feels as good as new.. I just can't use the mousepad all the time (need my vx mouse), and need to be able to use a flash key on a regular basis.

QFT... that was exactly what I was going to say.

I think some components on the mainboard related to the USB ports are going bad... the computer is quite old so it's not totally unexpected.

Aw.. C'mon .. 3+ years old is not THAT old.. ;)

How is your M6BNe??.. Mine is almost 5 years old and still works like new.. and is the one everyone uses at home. The poor thing is sometimes on almost 24/7. :p

My sons' V6Va is older than the V6V and it has giving me ZERO problems - in fact .. I am amaze it is still alive (you know teenagers.. ).

But I think you are totally right. I might as well just get a PCMCIA card and thanks my lucky stars that it is a cheap and easy fix to keep my baby going for another couple of years.. lol

Yeah, it's not really that old -- but it's old enough that you can start to expect this sort of thing... especially in a thin laptop that is not the coolest on the planet.

My M6BNe runs fine as well, and we use it as a TV :D to watch movies since it has such a nice screen. I bought it may 2005, so 3.5 years old, but in the meantime it went through a carcrash which led to most of the internal components being replaced (motherboard, LCD, etc) so it's really more like 2.5 years old.

HA!!!.. Mine is being used as TV/DVD player ... :D .. that's why I say the poor thing is on almost 24/7. The HDD died last year, but again.. that was a cheap fix.
