Hello all,
I've had my computer for about 3 weeks now, running Win7 Pro -
My issue is that all of my keyboard functions work except for shift + 9 to open the parenthesis. I'm not sure when or why this issue started, or how to fix it.
When I press shift + 9, it actually does the page up function exactly. It's like page up somehow got mapped to shift + 9.
I've been through Windows Support, who said it was a hardware issue. They tried all of their options. Also, making the open parenthesis works using the on-screen keyboard, as well as with a wireless keyboard. I reinstalled drivers for the keyboard and ATK as well.
Talked to Asus, and they're sending me something to ship the laptop out. It's still hard for me to believe this is a hardware issue - haven't even had the computer for a month. Does anyone have any ideas? All other numbers and their respective shift symbols work perfectly.
Thanks
*If you haven't noticed this issue, please test it and let us know if you have it

Kyoo, I would suggest booting into safe mode (F8) after turning on the machine, then test shift 9. Please let us know the results

i had to have the touchpad replaced on my week old u36sd. Needless to say i was pretty angry because i had just put in an ssd and installed windows with all the drivers etc. i guess it happens sometimes

I have the same problem with the open parenthesis ( key.
The 9 key works and so does Shift. Seems like it can't be hardware.
Help please.

I think it can't be hardware because the 9 and Shift keys work separately and the Shift key works correctly in combination with the other number keys as you would expect. -tl

Yes, page-up

very strange... bump for more responses - ASUS wants me to send them the laptop for the issue

I have the same issue with shift+9. It is not a hardware issue because everything works fine if I boot into linux. It also works fine if I use an external keyboard which makes me think it is a driver issue or something..
-
For what it's worth, we've got the same issue here, on a Swedish keyboard layout (still shift+9 though, but expected character is closing parenthesis). Ends up working as page up instead.
Did a complete restore once, and the problem went away. But it's now back again, so I guess it's some driver or other software that has been updated and is causing this issue. -
I have the same issue as well. It worked fine untill about 33 windows updates were installed and now shift +9 results in page up. Please help and I am not inyerested in sending my ultrabook back to Asia.
What to do? -
I have tried to use older drivers and also changed to generic drivers but nothing will change the fact that the paranthesis on shift +9 will not work. Has anyone tried to uninstall the drivers completely and reinstall?

Hello all - 48 hours with the new slick computer and the shift 9 issue has dashed my enthusiasm. Also the right arrow key has a different feel and click to it than all other keys. Has anyone resolved the shift 9?
-
I'm glad I'm not the only one, and that it's not a hardware issue - I'm going to give Asus a call right now
-
(success) I just spend a few minutes with ASUS support. We tried updating the BIOS, reinstalling ATK etc but what fixed it was doing a system restore at a 'restore point' just before the shift9 issue started happening. Seems that there was a 'windows critical update' that happened just before the issue arose. It took a few minutes but everything seems to be working now. Tech's advice was to ensure windows updates install fully....could have been an issue related to that. (((((((((((((((((. feels good to be able to open the parenthesis as it's part of my writing style and critical in excel.
Anyone else having a noisy and clicky right arrow key? -
Which update was it? So we can all know to avoid it
Anyway, as this is more of a band-aid to the issue, instead of everyone with the netbook avoiding one particular windows update I've let Asus know and I think (hopefully) they are working to resolve it. A little unreasonable to tell purchasers to avoid update x -
bump bump bump

Going back to a Sept restore point is not a good option. Any more specifics about which Windows update to 're-install' ? -tl
-
Or a legitimate fix by Asus? This is something they really need to sort out...
-
We sent our one in to get fixed. I'd suspect it's a rare issue that only occurs in a few computers shipped.
It's strange though, since it really doesn't seem to be an hardware issue... So we'll see.
My UX31 hasn't got any issues though! -
I don't know how to fix it, but I do know that pressing the Function key along with Shift+9 will create the open parenthesis. It's at least a workaround until they get this sorted!
-
this is definitely a software issue. -
Hey Guys,
I also have a zenbook ux21, and have encountered the same problem. It was indeed what people said about plugging in an external keyboard and pressing numlock, then disconnecting it.
If you don't have a keyboard readily available, there is still a way to fix the problem. I tried editing the registry, but it did not seem to work. What did work was writing a quick VB script to simulate sending a numlock press. Start notepad, and put this script in it:
set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshShell.SendKeys "{NUMLOCK}"
and save the file as FixNumlock.vbs
Run the script, and your numlock woes should be solved
