Yeah, about 20% improvement. And this 940m actually runs great at +135MHz core and +200MHz vRAM overclocks. Wish I could unlock the core, as it probably has more room for overclock and thermals are still under 80C even.

It's usually a bit trickier to work on an integrated bios system, but it can be done.

Honestly, I'd much rather see GDDR5 and take what little OC I can achieve as an added bonus. 20% improvement would help quite a bit in a lot of games.

Yes in this class of GPU it's the difference between just usable and good.

Interestingly, I've been really impressed with the basic Intel HD520. I was on the fence between the UA and UB, decided that I don't really play many games anymore so I went for the UA. For casual gaming the HD520 was a big surprise - I run Assetto Corsa, DIRT Rally, and GTAV at above 30fps, which is playable.

I don't doubt the GT940 is an upgrade, but even the HD520 falls into the "usable" category.

Part of the reason for the MX series is the improvements from intel.

    Hey buddy1065,

I have the same laptop and am trying to do the fix for the yellow display that you mentioned in an earlier post except that I can't find Intel HD Graphics Control Panel. It's not listed in my system tray or in my listed apps. When I do a search for it, my computer lists it in the search results but when I click on the result, nothing happens. I'm attaching two screen shots, one of what it looks like when I search for it, and the other of what it looks like when I go to "All Apps" where it is not listed. Do you know how I can access it? I'm thinking it might have gotten deleted by accident when the tech guy from Asus was getting me to delete drivers on my computer in an effort to troubleshoot the yellow display issue earlier today. When I go to "Device Manager/Display Adapters" I see something listed called "HD Intel Graphics Display" so I'm pretty confused right now lol.

Ok, after a lot of digging I found out that for some reason, it wasn't on my computer and I had to install it from the Intel website. I'll post back here if I think I've found a good setting for getting a "true yellow".

Well, after playing with it for a while, I'm sad to say I wasn't able to improve the look of the yellow without negatively affecting the other colors. It seemed like there was a slider to go in every color direction except towards a more "yellow" look. Strange...

The issue is related to LCD panel itself therefore it cannot be truly resolved but rather improved.
Contact ASUS directly to request for a RMA and have them perform a swap for you.

Googling the color "yellow" and comparing pics with the screen on my Sony Z11 I can see the lack of yellow on the UX303UB. As you say the sliders cannot duplicate the yellow on the Z11 laptop screen.

It looks like an issue with the actual LCD colour itself rather than a settings or firmware issue.

I saw the version of the same data that Notebookcheck had put up- so this is good to verify.
I was more hoping there had been an announcement or official release date for the chips at CES / manufacturers letting us know what models would get refreshed with that chip. The 303 would be perfect.

Real bummer I discovered but not the laptop's fault; Windows 10 has no dependable DVD software. Fortunately VLC player free software works fine with my USB Memorex DVD player. I really don't care about the mustard yellows on the 303; since I use it as a desktop replacement it is plugged into a 40" Visio TV monitor via HDMI and yellows are perfect. Bose portable Soundlink BT speaker is great with the 303 although I find the built in speakers are much better than the average 13" laptop.

Just to pop a note in here, I'm successfully running my GPU overclocked using MSI Afterburner 4.2.0 with driver version 361.75. Core clock at +135 and memory clock at +250 (so max should be 1298/1150). Testing with Valley Benchmark, temperature stabilizes at 83 °C although I have seen it go to 90 °C (Coh2).

I am also driving a triple display setup using one of these puppies: http://www.startech.com/AV/Displayp...DisplayPort-Multi-Monitor-MST-Hub~MSTMDP123DP It's great for productivity work and with settings turned down, actually usable for gaming as well.

Hope this helps some of you out there.

    Hey guys,

I'm a newbie here, but I was looking around for portable ultrabooks for college and the 303ua and 303ub are amongst the top on the list. I have, however, heard of the hinge problem that plagued some of the past models and I want to buy an ultrabook that will last a few years, so does anyone know if these two (same design but different specs I believe) have the same issue? Furthermore, has anyone figured out a permanent way to fix the yellow color issue (not by recalibration which was said to be reset after restarting laptop)?

    Thanks!

Calibration will not reset after restarting the laptop. It will load a calibration file on startup. And apparently the latest 303UB have a new hinge. I haven't seen any real confirmation of tha thtough.

The yellow issue has been fixed with the latest UX303UB. I speak from personal experience.

The hinge design is also different, but not sure how much better it is from the original design.

Sorry for leaving the current subject. After few months, I could find that this laptop is better working with resolution of 1920x1080. That's in terms of programs and scaling. I had to tolerate some issues though.

I made some caparison between the two resolutions (3200 and 1920) on:
    http://www.mohamadkarbi.me/post.asp?id=28
and explained how I managed to remove glitches/lag from Firefox with nVidia on 3200x1800 display

Has anyone noticed that the touchpad has a noticeable delay between when you make a gesture (e.g. single tap to click) and when that gesture registers? In my case, it's around a half-second between when I tap, and when the system registers the tap. Other actions, including moving the cursor or clicking the touchpad buttons, do not incur the same delay.

As an example of how to reproduce this: if I move the cursor to the arrow below the browser's scrollbar, and tap repeatedly, only about half of my taps register, and each one registers with a delay. On my old laptop (a Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus), every tap registers almost instantly.

Is anyone else seeing the same issue? In trying to resolve it, here are a few things I've tried which do NOT work:

    - Uninstalling ASUS Smart Gesture
    - Changing the "delay before clicks work" in the Windows 10 Touchpad setting

    Any thoughts?

After struggling a bit more with the touchpad, I've decided to give up on the UX303UB altogether. In addition to the gesture delay issue, I'm also finding that the touchpad isn't sensitive enough - and ASUS provides no option for changing the touchpad's sensitivity. This is downright inexcusable, given that touchpad sensitivity has been adjustable basically since the dawn of touchpads. I've heard the UX303UB touchpad is at least better than those on older Zenbooks, but it still can't come close to my (now 2.5-year-old) Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus.

The UX303UB is currently being factory-restored, and then it's going back to Amazon. What a huge disappointment.

I have only used touch pad buttons if forced to use the touch pad, however there does seem to be a delay if you position the cursor below the scrolling toolbar and click. I have never had a reason to do it quite that way so I never noticed it until you bought it up. I mainly use a BT mouse and have no problems whatsoever. My experience has been anything but a disappointment. In fact this laptop has proven itself as a keeper considering its quality, features and price point compared to other laptops in the same size category, but I understand how it could be a deal breaker for you. Let us know how your search for a more suitable laptop for you turns out.

Thanks for trying this out on your UX303UB - I really appreciate it. To be honest, I wish I weren't bothered by the touchpad delay, as everything else about the laptop is great. Though when you're browsing the web, and every click takes a quarter-second to register, it has that same sluggish feel as when you're browsing through a slow proxy...

Something I definitely learned from the experience is that it's hard to trust review sites' opinion of a touchpad. For other parts of the laptop, there are at least quantitative metrics you can rely on, e.g. key travel for a keyboard, decibel level for fan noise, temperature measurements under load for heat, and so on. For touchpads, it's usually more subjective, e.g. "the touchpad is large and feels natural to use." If they started measuring input lag and sensitivity, that would be a huge help.

In terms of searching for a different laptop, truthfully I'm likely to stay with the 2013 Samsung for now. Given that the Samsung has a 3200x1800 display, I'm hesitant to drop back down to FHD. However, there are only a handful of 3200x1800 options out there, and each seems to have at least one serious issue. From what I can tell from tryout out a few of these, I found:

    ASUS Zenbook: noticeable touchpad delay
Dell XPS13: short key travel, gets pretty hot (likely because they used such a small chassis)
Microsoft Surface Book: weight distribution feels weird, given that most of the weight is in the screen (so that it can detach as a tablet)

There is also the Lenovo Yoga 900, though it appears to have both a small touchpad and short key travel. Maybe waiting a year will bring some new options/redesigns to the marketplace.

You might also be interested to know that although touching above or below the browser bar with a touch pad input gives a delay, doing the same thing with my Bluetooth mouse gives instantaneous response which leads me to believe it is a Windows 10 software problem and not a hardware problem at all.
Which Windows version is on your 2013 Samsung?

but still a plastic chassis inside. It's not metal where it counts.

hinge design doesn't matter if it's still screwed into plastic, like it still is.
The difference with macbook air is that the hinge is screwed into aluminum. So the hinge will never break away from the lid under normal use like cheap pc notebooks do.

macbook/air lids are all one piece of aluminum, not plastic epoxied to aluminum shell.
Look at this nice chunk of aluminum from apple, and see that block of metal where the hinges screw in.
Not gonna see this on a cheap Asus.

When the Macbook Air gets a touch screen and a dedicated GPU I'll be the first one in line. Since my hinges are still perfect I will stick with the Asus. For now the only Apple laptop having a dedicated GPU is the top of the line $2500 Macbook Pro. Sorry; not in my budget.

Hi everybody! I was shopping for a new laptop for over a month and after a lot of comparison and deliberation, I decided to go with the UX303UB (mostly because it's the lightest 13.3 with a discrete GPU). Another reason I decided to go with it is because of upgrade options. Speaking of which, I was going to fill in the empty mini mSATA slot with a cache SSD and I was reading that the max was 128 GB, however I have found a 256 GB that is being claimed by the seller to be compatible with the UX303. For reference, I am living in China now and in case you wanted to know a juicy bit of Asus laptop trivia, the UX303 is known as the U303 here (for some reason many of the Zenbook line has slightly different model numbers). Has anyone successfully found and installed a 256 GB half height (mini) mSATA stick into their UX303?

I can't really speak to this, unfortunately, but I'd like to ask: why use that much storage for cache? If you're using a mechanical drive currently, a 256GB drive would be a nice primary storage upgrade v.s being a cache drive.

My plan was to use the SSD for more than just primary cache by installing games that I frequently play on them as well. At 128GB, this means that I could store maybe 4 with no other programs on it, but at 256, I wouldn't have to manage space so much. Maybe there is something I am missing though: are there any substantial differences in speed between mini mSATA and the regular SATA for the 2.5" drive? Or what disadvantages are there to having 256 GB? (Other than price)

Well, it's been pretty quiet over here, so I guess I'll give an update on my mSATA project!

Long story short, the project was a failure, mostly because the UX303UB does not have the mSATA slot :(

Unlike the UX303LN, which (according to dissasembly guides I have read) retains the mSATA slot even after the UX303 started shipping with SSDs in the 2.5" slot. The UB model does not.

Furthermore, there were some people online that said that the WiFi card could be removed and used with an SSD. This did not appear to be true for the mini mSATA drive that I purchased, and it did not appear to be an m.2 connection either.

In conclusion, if I had the opportunity to buy a reasonably priced UX303LN, I definitely would have gone down that route since the CPU and GPU are only marginally slower than then the latest generation CPU and GPUs, but since the old gen CPU/GPU eat up less power, the battery life appeared to be significantly longer (according to the benchmarks I've seen). Moreover, I could have realized my storage HDD + OS SSD dream...ah well.

Next on my project list, benchmarking the RAM I purchased to verify that the 4GB module was in fact a better move than buying a 8GB module.

I recently purchased a UX303UB and everything is great, except the metal seems to be too fragile and I am worried its going to get scratched easily. I searching everywhere for a clear skin like the ones from invisible shield but I cant find one.

Anyone know any site that sells one for this model?
